I just aquired a 1969 regatta with a Mercury 125 horse power outboard. I'm having a hard time finding an exact way to authenticate it as a super bp. According to the old mercs website the serial number falls in the regular 1250 and the 1250 super bp category. If anyone can give me some ideas or let me know what pictures I can attach of certain parts it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Looks like a stock 125 to me. Transfer port covers are wrong to be a Super BP. This is a picture of the 135 port covers. Same as Super BP
Do the standards have any value to them the boat has alot of work needed to be done not sure if I'm going to keep it. Thanks again for all the help.

I'm thinking this is a '68 stock motor based upon the advance mechanism of the dirtributor - unique to '68 I think.
Might be a 68 powerhead, but 68's did not have the MERC 1250 decal on the top cowling. That came out on the 69's.Quote:

Agree that the cowl stickers are 69, I think the only year that it had them on the cowl hat that said Merc 1250 And I know the 69 bp model had a red and white race stripe that run over the center line of the top cowl hat, a red stripe with a white pin stripe on each side of the red stripe. I do have pic's of the 69 super bp from back in the day that my father had destroyed a few of them, try to post later if you would like.
While many will disagree with my thoughts on this.....this motor can be a good runner. It may not be a BP motor but it is a L6 99.9......The good thing is that it don't have DC pistons and chamber. Less fussy on the crappy gas we now have. The ignition linkage has a crazy curve that tops out at 37* and then retards at WOT. Because not so gas fussy. Most DC motors have to cut back on TDC because of piston burning. It needs better Reeds, on that motor... held on by screws instead of nuts and bolts.
