Mercury 2.4 Stator Issue

Thanks for any help you can offer me. I have a 1983 mercury 2.4 200 hp serial #06392841. I have run some diagnostic tests on it; I believe I need a new Stator. It does not have a voltage regulator, only a rectifier. In the book, that motor used a 9amp stator and two different types of 16 amp stators. On another website, I thought I read that you only use the 9 amp stator with a rectifier setup. When I pulled my flywheel to get the number off the stator, there was no number. I measured the laminations on the stator and they measured 5/8 of an inch, which leads me to believe/guess that this is a 16 amp stator, which I'm not sure why/how this is working with the rectifier. I seem to go through a lot of ignition coils; don't know if the motor is just prone to that or if it's a stator. Also the number on the flywheel is 74787, which I don't believe is the original flywheel for the motor. Not sure, but I think I saw that number flywheel on a 70 or 80 hp Mercury (online). This may be a smaller flywheel than the stock one- maybe as a performance upgrade?
I'm trying to figure out which stator to run with the rectifier and this flywheel. The motor has no spark on starboard bank. Did all the tests according to CDI website. It's not the coils and am pretty sure it's not the switchboxes (they're pretty new.) CDI site told me to lean towards the stator after doing the diagnostics.

Try swapping the switch boxes position to see if your problem moves to the other cylinders, port bank 2-4-6.

You did test stator and switch box outputs with a DVA or PVA? ( some meters have this feature built in )

Were the coils replaced 1-3-5?

I swapped the switch boxes and it still had the same problem. Same with coils. Leaning towards the stator- don't have a DVA meter. Just not sure which stator to purchase?

I would go by what's called for by your serial number. To my knowledge, the 83 motors had the 9 amp. And no regulator.

Thanks- that's what my thinking was. Just concerned since the flywheel seems to not be the one originally for that motor and worried it wouldn't work with the 9 amp. Don't really want to replace the flywheel.

It goes through coils a lot. What's your experience with that?

I just bought the whole shebang for my 1983 2.4. I haven't gotten it yet. You will NOT find a better place than lowcostboating.com Nobody can touch their prices. You will search for hours and end back over there.
Marine engine . com is also a great place to look, they have the old motor pages on the right if you can't look up a serial number.

I don't have a hard fast answer for that. :o

I know clean tight connections are necessary. With no moving parts, and just inductance of a collapsed magnetic filed from the primary windings into the secondary windings to produce the spark...no reason there to fail, unless it's poorly made, non OE coils. Also the natural heat and cool cycles of the power head along with vibration...:confused:

Same question could apply to the stator...no moving parts, also exposed to the same environment...heat & cold cycles and vibration. We also know these fail to often. :mad:

I can say in my experience, I've had more switch boxes fail, and stators fail than I've had coil failure on the V6 Mercs.

The older Mercury coils had a metal tab that tucked behind the coil when mounted to (primary windings ground) ground on the divider cover. Possible trouble there. Not sure what year that was changed to the ground wire attached to the cover with a small bolt. MY 85 2.0L 150 has the ground wire to bolt ground.

The 9 amp and 16 amp stator use the same flywheel.

what color is tha flywheel?

It's an olive drab green.
