I reckon I did OK. 79 Hydrostream Vulture

Did a bit of trading with a friend. Traded a 16' Lowe Jon Boat (had $200 invested in it) for a 79 Vulture. The core, floor, and stringers where redone a few years ago with coosa. I got the boat complete with all the rigging minus the engine. Has some damage on the starboard side that need to be fixed then I'll paint it.

I have a few possible power plants to choose from. Old 2.4 175 (has a bad cylinder), 97 175efi, or a early 2000s CDM 200 2.5 fishing motor. Don't really know which will be the best starting platform. I am Mercury certified tech, but I've never had to play with the performance side of things so I'm a bit lost on which platform to start with so any advice would be great.

Any advice on what powerhead to start with? 2.4 175, 1997 175EFI (2.5 liter?) Or a CDM 200?

I have a good 3.0 225 carb powerhead but it's 25" and don't have a 20" mid or case for it.

yuor lucky...the mid section, smooth offshore can is worth the whole rig...stay with the 2.5 or 2.4 the 3 ltr is too heavy and wont fit the mid...the VULTURE they called the BUS because of the longated cocpit...lots of room good luck with it...

Didn't get the engine. But I got a complete 200 2.5 with a hole in it. And a 2.4 200 with a burnt piston.

I like the size. Where I live (eastern VA) its rare to have smooth water. While I know I won't be making full throttle runs in 1' chop at least I can get to a creek or the beach.

I think for the time I might toss my spare 200 fishing motor on it while building/saving for something a bit better. Hopefully it will get me in the 70s?

From reading I've ordered a 10" set back jack plate. Any "guess" on a decent prop for a starting point? I plan on plugging the top few intake holes and going up until pressure starts to drop. No nose cone. Gonna be RPM limited to 5800.

with out a lwp 10" setback isway too much...you need a 4" set back so you can adjust the heigth for a stock case...will get on plane easy with the fishin motor and still reach max rpm5800-6000 and maintain water pressure, and ride good in 1 ft chop..with a 24p prop you should see 60+ mph...have fun with it...

Ok. Should I look into swapping the IGN from one of the parts motors on to the CDM motor to get rid you for the rev limiter and spin it higher? I am planning on swapping to standard cut heads to gain some low and mid. When will the 2.5 200 hit the "wall" around 6500?

I'd like to have this boat in the mid 70s.

10 inch setback will be fine. With a standard ignition the late 200 s will pull to 6500 easy. It would be nice if cdi would make a raised rpm limit controller for those motors.

From my reading it seems they fall in power pretty quick at 6500 and above. Is that correct?

ITS A MOD BASS CAN SOMEONE PUT A MAKESHIFT SNOUT ON IT:rolleyes:

Never heard of using Coosa instead of Balsa for the core. Great for everything else tho. Great find.

I don't know, that's how the guy did it. He's a fiberglass guy and is obsessed with the stuff. Hopefully it is OK. The boat ran and handled great after all the work.
