Looming to get away from nic motor, hate to use it as tow boat, still want my speed and looking for longer engine life, I live on large lakes and can stretch it out for miles, but looking for all around fun, maybe ported promax or ported 200, or pro-stock type, maybe sell or trade my motor, what do the pro's think? Oh its on a SS allison
I've thought about picking up a wounded 260,and doing six steel sleeves and a set of vertex pistons.Spend the time to dial in the cooling,or run on a two piece plate with stats and keep the rpms in the low 7000 range.Just mite last a long time----Or maybe not:D
Well I thought the same but was pointed out why use a nic block when it's cheaper to port or resleave a fishing motor, I'm not in the oilfield anymore so I can't really afford the high maintenance of nic
If you aren't trying to run a class and can do whatever sell the nic block only and put everything on the promax block.
Very close in performance without the high dollar nic, pistons and rings IMO.
Does not cost any more to put steel sleeves in a nic block than a steel one,plus there would be very little port work to do. Just use preported sleeves, and trim them up after the install.If you were going to port and resleeve all six in a fish motor.I think that would cost more than six steel sleeves in a 260.
Well I could sale my nic motor and build what I want, nic is in good shape, no welds,bone stock, cc reeds @ spacer,and would have a long lasting motor

im with ya pete......been debating this for a while.....i agree with what outasite said though about less work using 260 block.
friend of mine said he steel sleeved a 260 of his and was charged about 250 a hole...that adds up quick but then again the rings he runs now only cost about 100
definitely cheaper buying a ol' 200 block than even a scuffed up 260 block....
ive also thought it might be fun working on a 200 block myself ...give me some "garage beer time" activities....like i need any more..............:)
also heard the later style 200 blocks had same exhaust chest as 260/225pm??????
Don't kill a perfectly good Nic block, get 225 Pro Max motor. The put out low to mid 240hp stock, few tweaks and your good to go.

You mean something like this, build them all the time, and start with a 200block, and port it and use all 260 stuff. These are going on a 24 skater Attachment 341371
I'm with you Dave. The 225 Promax is absolutely the best option from the start....sticking with a factory setup makes everything downstream much easier and predictable....and they run great.
Now if you are all tooled up and the object is to make a pile of metal shavings....then have at it.
If your looking to plug and play,then by all means 225 pro max all the way! BUT if your thinking of a builder,What I suggested was a "wounded"260 block, not a perfectly good one.Taking a 260 that needs a renic, and has one or two gouged holes that needs a new nic sleeve or two,may not be the best choice to turn back into a full blown 260,but could serve as the perfect platform for a steel bore conversion.JMO
Late EFI blocks have a good port but its still short of a promax and 260. Fishing chest is lacking on all of them when compared to promax/260.
The difference in the angles behind the liner greatly affect where the motor makes power. This is why MOST "260 ported" steel motors dont twist like the factory nic motors even with the same chest and front. THe porting takes tons of time and if you match the heights or put 260 spec sleeves in a steel motor yea it runs better but.....
I think I'm going to sell my powerhead and get a promax, what should it be worth? I figure 4k - 4.5k, NIC is good I think maybe original, 92 model, no welds all stock, comp 138-144 cold, all cold readings CCR and spacer, lightweight flywheel,
