New Four-Stroke Performance for Tunnel Boat Racers ▼

Mercury Racing expands its Apex Series of competition outboards with the introduction of the Mercury Racing 200 APX, a V6 four-stroke model designed for UIM F2 and APBA OPC tunnel boat racing. Rated at more than 200 horsepower, the 200 APX outboard offers racers a very durable powerhead and the latest in four-stroke engine technology, while reducing exhaust emissions by 90 percent compared to the Mercury Racing 200 SX two-stroke outboard currently in use in these classes, which is no longer in production. The Mercury Racing 200 APX will be available in May, 2021, only to qualified racing teams.

“The new 200 APX is designed to deliver outstanding performance while reducing the cost of maintenance and fuel for F2 and OPC race teams, many of which are amateurs,” said Stuart Halley, Mercury Racing general manager. “Mercury Racing is also striving to produce high-performance and competition engines that keep emissions to a minimum, and the 200 APX helps push that effort forward.”

This beautiful, restored and extremely rare STV tunnel-vee is owned by Jim Kay and is powered by a SportMaster-equipped Mercury Racing 300XS. The design of this hull is very reminiscent of a HydroStream YT, though this boat is larger, being 20-feet. Reportedly, six were produced, and two of those were factory-made stern-drive models.

(March 15, 2021) — Mercury Racing® has expanded the pitch range of its popular Revolution® 4 XP propeller line, investing in a new base casting that will be used to produce this high‑performance prop in a 15‑inch diameter and pitches of 26.0, 26.5, 27.0 and 27.5 inches. This new casting will be used to replace the current 14.63‑inch diameter Revolution 4 XP at 26.0‑ and 26.5‑inch pitch sizes.

“The latest high‑performance center console boats, paired with multiple Mercury Racing 400R and 450R outboards, are requiring a taller pitch propeller due to the speeds being achieved,” said Mercury Racing Performance Propeller Manager Nick Petersen. “They are running right to the rev limiter. This new propeller offering will open the speed range for customers that prefer the design of the Rev 4. A boat that’s now out of rpm at 86 mph may be able to reach 90 mph without hitting the rev limiter.”

A Truly Incredible Experience!▼

The Alva River Run was just amazing. The entire island was like one giant party barge with boats all around it, and not an extra space to be spared. It really is a great location and there were no mishaps of any kind. Hanging out on the island with a panoramic view of all the boats really was exactly what I needed after being in lockdown so long. The variety of boats there was astounding, from a classic Checkmate to one of Wildman Randy's Liberator creations and almost everything you can imagine was present. It really was a great day to shoot photos.

Whether storing your boat for months or years, a few extra steps can make a big difference▼

With the exception of the the diehards among us, the boating season is over for most people up north now so I thought this might be a good time to outline some tips for the proper storage of your boat during the off-season or just taking it out of service. I should note that this article is about the care of your hull in storage, not the engine and other systems.

There are many sources for preparing engines for storage, however I’ve found that often the hulls themselves are usually put into storage with not much more than a cover. That may be fine for short-term, in-between-use layups, however, additional steps should be taken if the boat is to be stored for more than a month.

It's That Time Again! ▼

It seems to have become a tradition to give away a Fire TV during the holidays, so here we go again! I use my Fire TV every day, and during the COVID solitary confinement, it has helped a great deal. So I will be giving away the new 2020 version of the Fire TV Stick with Alexa remote. I don't think anybody is sure how long COVID will continue to be a big concern, so maybe this device will make any future lockdowns a bit easier.

FOND DU LAC, Wis. (September 15, 2020) – The new Mercury Racing 360 APX competition outboard is a potent four-stroke V8 designed specifically to power Formula One tunnel boats on the UIM F1H2O World Championship. The 360 APX outboard is the first model in a new Mercury Racing Apex Series of outboards designed for closed-course competition, and will be available in late 2020 only to qualified racing teams.

“The 360 APX will usher in a new era of performance for this premier class of tunnel boat racing,” said Stuart Halley, Mercury Racing general manager. “It combines a durable, low-emissions, four-stroke powerhead with amazing performance, and will require much less maintenance than the two-stroke outboard currently in use in the F1H2O World Championship.”

HydroStream V-King Returns to Metalflake Glory!▼

Classic HydroStream boats are all old now, and most of them are at a point where they need serious restoration to bring them back to their original state of glory. Like any restoration of a classic vehicle, the result is truly a statement of the talent and resourcefulness of the restorers.

I don't think anybody here that knows Ronnie Holzmacher knows how incredible these photos will be. I've known Ronnie over 20 years and I'm always amazed by his work, and being that he did his magic on a HydroStream, that made me pretty excited. Brian Carhart replaced the floor and stringers, and I hope Brian and Ronnie will jump in here with more details. When was the last time you saw metalflake that awesome? I just love metalflake!
