• Mercury Racing Introduces the New 250 APX Engine for Formula 1 Racing

    Mercury Racing is stepping up its game in the Formula 1 Championship Series with the new 250 APX ▼
    The latest engine in Mercury Racing's APX series, the 250 APX is a 4.6-liter V8 will make its racing debut at the Port Neches Riverfest in Texas on May 3.

    The 250 APX joins its larger brother, the 360 APX as the second V8 four-stroke engine designed explicitly for tunnel boat racing. It features a double-overhead cam valvetrain and a 12-inch racing-specific midsection
    “Mercury Racing was born out of competition,” said Jeff Broman, director of category for Mercury Racing. “Expanding our Apex Series portfolio with this new V8 and partnering with F1 Powerboat Championship as a season sponsor demonstrates our commitment to tunnel boat racing and leading the pack while doing so. The 250 APX is going to take race teams to the next level of competition.”

    Further expounding on its dedication to the sport, Mercury Racing will be the official marine engine sponsor for for the Formula 1 Powerboat Championship series, and its Race Support Team will be present at the races. Legendary Formula 1 driver and managing director of the Formula 1 Powerboat Championship, Tim Seebold has a 43-year career in the sport and the 250 APX represents Mercury Racing's solid commitment to Formula 1 racing.

We’ve both been around for 50 years and the introduction of the 250 APX strengthens Mercury Racing’s commitment to the future of our series, the competitors and the high-performance marine market.     The current V6 200 APX engine will continue to be offered in Mercury Racing's lineup and serves as a entry point to compete in Formula 1. The new engines are available only to qualified race teams.

      Seems to be a down tuned version of the 360 APX.
      110 less horsepower with 200 less RPM.
      Runs on 89 octane instead of 91 octane.
      Looks like they have the same gear ratio. But the overdrive ratio is different.
      For some reason the 250 is listed as 6 lbs. HEAVIER than the 360. 436lbs. vs. 430lbs.

      Seems odd they didn't build this on the 4 stroke 3.4 liter V-6 platform? Seems like 250hp from 3.4 liters is easily attainable. Would be lighter. Considering the slow adoption of the 360 in F1H2O, they'd try to get it as light as possible.
