is it possable to set up guages and wiring for multiple types of engines?

i'm rigging a center console and want to not use control boxes for ignition sw, trim, choke etc. also want to switch motors down the line, rude to merc or yam. want a nice looking insterment cluster, lavorsi-gaffrig etc. can i set up guages once and swap applications or does it require diff guages? the look i'm after is like on top dollar yachts everything is quite steril in apperance, function is primary, advertising last. hope i'm getting my intentions understandable. thanks fun
