Gaffrig Volt Meter Wiring Question

I am re-doing my dash panel and re-wiring everything. My Gaffrig volt meter has the "S" (signal) terminal cut off so the only power it gets is thru the "I" (ignition) terminal. This tells me that the volt meter will display the nominal output voltage of the outboard's alternator when running. What if I want to know the battery voltage? Can I put a switch in the circuit to switch between ignition input and a direct line from the battery for battery voltage?
