There is no difference whatsoever between a Mercury and Mariner (except for the exterior paint). They both use the same part numbers, etc.

I believe the Magnum II is the same as the Mercury XR4 150, which is a 2.4 litre.

I thought Mariners used more steel where Mecury uses stainless steel - for parts like driveshafts, etc.

Most Mariners are the same as Mercury, but some of the smaller Mariners were made by Yamaha and maybe some other japanese companys. There was a 40hp Mariner made by Yamaha. Mercury offered a 40 or 45hp that was built by Mercury marine at the same time.

Sad thing is that though they are exactly the same except for color and decals when you try to sell them the Mercury is like a .50 hooker and the Mariner like a 500lb old maid. Down here in my neck of the woods you can't hardly give a Mariner away. I buy the Mariners paint em' black and put new decals on them. BOOM!!! Instant Mercury. I was told by a Merc. rep a few years ago that they both were assembled on the same line and when they attempted to fire the engines, if it fired 1st try they Painted grey and put Mariner on it, and if it took more than one try to fire that it was paited Black and Mercury put on it. Seems like something is BASSACKWARDS to me. Who knows, I've got both and enjoy the Heck out of them. Just my .02.; :p :p :p
