Has anyone had any dealings with this motor? The last 2 years I have been to Destin Fla and, alot of the offshore fishing boats run yamahas.....(outnumbered mercs 10 to 1) made me wonder do they know something I dont???......I have run a 2.4 200hp for years and looking to up grade.I dont like tinkering with things....I LIKE IT STOCK!....?

I have 2 friends that both have 300hpdi's on them, they are on 26'playcraft tritoons, and they love them, easy on fuel, and lots of power, 2 years and no trouble so far.

strong motor for the 280-300 hp class... but are a little weak compared to the 300X..
slightly stronger than the verado 275 and about 150 lbs lighter.. if you can carry 550 lbs of engine on your boat they are good engines with a good track record so far.. in biger boats they have a gearing advantage due to 1.87 gearing that comes wit the 25 and 30" shafts, in the Vmax 20" motors they come with factory LWP and a fantastic designed CLE, their down side is the LWP is slightly above the centerline of the propshaft on the sides rather than lower than the propshaft like a standard nose cone..
If I were to buy a new mota it would be a yamaha or Zuki..

Got a bud who has 2 on a 31' Contender, spun a few hubs in the begining but has been trouble free going on two years now, carries the 31' CC w/full fishing load 62 to 63 gps.

I have a friend with a 300 hpdi 20 inch with low water pick up on a 20 ft phantom.
He turns a 29 pro v yamaha prop at 6000 rpm.
He is doing some local races overhere, and smoked a 21 ft equal style and weight bernico with a 300x easy.
He,s at least 4-5 mph faster than the bernico, and acceleration is so much better than the .
Don,t think the bernico with 300x is not set up right, both are full raceboats and set up for speed.
All I,m trying to say as a big mercury fan(I have a 26 cat with 2 x 2,5 EFI,s)
The yamaha ,s are good and fast,I wonder what will happen if I put 2 of those yammies on my 26 cat ?
I think there are no propellors on earth big enough to turn them not faster than the rev limiter.

that is the one engine they make that I don't care for IMO I feel that they tried to push too much power out of it . We sold a lot of them on 32' Regulators around here and I always felt that they were pushing it to call it a 300.
you may want to do a search on water intrusion on Z300- that problem sucked!

who is a Yamaha dealer gets more of those in blown up then any other model.. I was listening to him talking to a Mercury mechanic. I don't remember the reason for the failures. Mike

There were issues of saltwater getting into the intakes and fouling plugs. This would also cause salt build up to get between the reeds and reed stops causing the reeds to break. This was only a problem on certain offshore boats and how they were being used. This has been cured for the most part They are very senstive to breakin and being set up properly, it must be done by the book. They may not be the strongest 300 around but now they are a reliable motor.

The Z300 is a great motor as long as you have had all the updates done by a dealer. They are changing reeds, motor harnesses, injectors, and many other little things. There was an article in Trailer Boat magazine about the Merc 300x and the Z300 going head to head, overall the merc was faster, but not by much. Don't even think about comparing the fuel consumption of the Merc to the Yamaha, the Yamaha burns over a third less of fuel.

Informative as alwayz! I'll do more homework before I spent my money! I know the 300x is the bad boy of Big Block outboards but, the price and fuel cosum. are a factor. I know there are alot of Mercs on the boards here but, how about the new suki?

the suzuki is a great motor.. waiting for conformantion from friend if they are going to release the rumored 300 in 06 or not.. the 250s are running excellent and if you have a bigger boat their 2.29 gear ratio gives you alot of holeshot, midrange and acceleration while turning a big pitch prop to get higher cruising speeds.... and as 250's are only usin 20 GPH of fuel at WOT...
