I have a customer with a 225 Pro Max that lost a locater pin , the ring broke got lodged in the squish band area of the head the piston came up and smacked the chunk of ring and the low $$ nylon rod bearing took a dump and smoked the crank. NOW to the point of this post , I called my dealer friend for a new crank and COST was $1600.00 + and list was $2564.00 now EVERYONE on the planet knows how STUPID these guys WERE on parts WELL I think because they know the "Fat Lady's" done sung on the 2 stroke Hi Per World and thier draining the last bit of life's blood from the consumer !
Checked on 2 cranks for 3 litres that was under water 250 X's (2004 optis ) that I am rebuilding and they were $650.00 cost ....... Go figure !Difference between Hi Per and Opti grade stuff ! Is opti grade cranks that inferior and cheap compared to the Hi Per cranks ? I hardly think so just another example of the supply and demand and what the market and consumer will bare !
Man if I only had the money those guys made on Hi Per. Parts in the last 5 years I'd be on E Street !
Happy Holidays !

Its time someone steps up and make some hipo aftermarket parts, hell make the whole powerhead too. shoot... may as well make all the parts powerhead to LU and sell the new engines as "parts in a box" to get around the epa guidlines.

It's nothing new,Jay. They pulled the same thing on Stock outboard racers over the years. Stuff like lower unit gears that were $150 $250 almost doubled when they decided they didn't want them anymore .... $375 was the last price on the little 20hp racing gear sets. When they were down to a couple dozen sets they offered to sell the lot of them to keep them from going out as scrap .... at list price. Now there are about 3 sets left in that guy's hands and Merc won't release the patterns or license to duplicate them at the original outside source until those three sets sell. AFTER those 3 sets sell we can have them duplicated for about $275 a set.

There'll never be ANYTHING that equals that 30 somethin' dollar plastic water tube guide sleeve that's basically 4" of PVC pipe and costs all of 15 or 20 cents to make.
It's always amazed me that stuff like TV's, computers, etc comes down in price once the development cost is amortized, yet Merc sells stuff like the EXACT SAME alum. flywheel they were building in the mid 70's for what.............. 6 or 8 times the price it was then? Thank God they don't control the PC market. If they did this laptop would probably cost half a million bucks.

The 225 pm crank is the same as a 2.5 200 crank, the list price has been over $2,000.00 for years, not just a hi-perf thing.
The 3.0 L parts have been less expensive since their beginning in 1995, the warranty labor rate is also about half that of the 2.5 line of motors, Mercury must think they just fall together so much better than the 2.5's I guess.

supply and demand.... i will go out on a limb and say the 2.0-2.5L V6's is the most popular highest demand engine ever built... even in my ****ty boat market there are thousands and seein anything smaller than 150 or larger than 200 is rare..

Look at it another way.
At least they still make parts for those motors
I'm afraid to break my fridge.

....you can replace it for $400 to $700. :D Try replacing a high perf Merc these days.......

supply and demand.....In reverse maybe - Merc raised the prices and stuff stayed on the shelf for years until they were ready to scrap it.

Tell me about it. I just paid over $500 for a driveshaft for my 300 ProMax. All it is is a 14" piece of stainless steel with splines in both ends. And get this - the driveshaft for the 25" motor (19" long) is only $275!!! Go figgure.

I bet if we could see the "scrap piles" of manufacturers nationwide it would blow our minds.
I have a customer that works for a company that builds breaker boxes and supplies for residential and comercial electrical systems. He works in the scrap room. You would not believe the stuff they throw out simply because they have had it too long as they put it. Thousands of feet of wire thrown out becase the plastic spool it's on has one end broken off. Thousands of pounds of hardware such as nuts and bolts.
You name it they throw it away. This is why it cost so much to go and buy a simple breaker box these days. They will throw away perfectly good supplies and re-order the same thing and put it back on the shelf.
I would give anything to go through Mercury's scrap pile.

stainless rod is only like 60 a foot.... have one built....
its sad when a person can hire a machinest or outsource manufacturing cheaper than if it were to be bought... and yea that fuel line price is rediculas... a whole 50' bulk roll isnt that much

All this money for the drag blocks and cranks and so on was what funded that awesome Verado project ! And what a motor that is ! Mercury has BEEN nuts for a while, the symptoms are just getting worse.

the $$ merc makes off of high perf stuff in the last 5 years is less than they make off of the verado in a week.

so merc has made back the 100 million invested on the verado????????
thats alot of motors... but havent or heard of THATmany sold yet... they aint makin 20K each.... more like 3... that takes ALOT of engines to recoup... dont think they done it yet..

whatever. the thought of high perf paying for anything beyond high perf is stupid. High perf barely lives in this market as it is. if you dont like merc prices, STFU and either #1 run an OMC or #2 go race a drag car and sell all your boat stuff. crybabys.

the 100 million was on a new lost-foam casting facility, not just for the verado, hence the "whatever" if i had my way I would have said "whatthe****ever"... OOps :o

regardless of how they spent the $$$ thy still spent it didnt they.... at 3k per engine of profit it would take 33334 engines to make it back... and btw just say it..... nobody cares..

You think you guys have it bad, I'll price the same part with a dealer here tomorrow (if I remeber  ) after Marine Power Europe takes their cut, the national distributer takes theirs and the dealer throws in his markup for the call he had to make  + VAT, Duty & shipping...
I needed to replace the trim lines on my motor last year and priced them from a local merc shop, €180 + VAT @21% = 217.8 each x2 = €435.6 ($520.25) for a pair of trim lines  Oh, and that was dealer cost!

Let's see!
We do a little corporate math!
Verodo! Retail 15k (give or take)
Dealer cost 11 to 13 Give or take we round to 10k
Total sales so for in the 2005 are 16,000 unit with alredy 45,000 units on order world wide for the 2006 model year.
So 16,000 plus 45,000 equals 61,000 units
Now lets take 61,000 unit x 10,000.00 now that's comes to!
61,000,000.00 now even if Mercury only made 2% after labor and cost!
That would be 1,222,000.00 dollars!
And you ask why that guy got hird by 3M?
Very simple!
And that is being conservative!
Now the price on everything else! Don't fool your self guy's! The dealers are breaking it off in your hind in parts! They are more than doubling there money.
They are getting big rebates and discounts off the billing. Big time!
Now, Mercury is making more than anyone, and the foriegn comercials showing customers getting hit in the balls with repair bills at Mercury shops is real. They do have them, That is Evenrude's comercial over sea's about Mercury repair prices. I wish I could find the link again.

hey super dave, im putting up my nautical display showcase in my brand
new house, and half of it will already be used, and if it included gear cases,
id have to build another house, haha. now that the house is done, i will
try to make up for your lack of work, my extra shelf space, and end your
days of "taking it easy", by trying to blow up your "hand-grenades", just
to decorate my beautiful living room shelves. i love to see the burned
pistons, chunks of power head, and the pictures of us doing it, but im
planning on paying your fuel oil bill this winter, by getting the stress relief
that i deserve, and getting you back in the shop, and helping put that
smile back on my face, as i keep us "damned fools" number 1 on this
shore, for years to come, no matter what they bring, and were always
going to do it with a 200, hahahahaha. sighned, smilemaker.

that is why I figured 3000 dolars not 20K... I figured general rule.. 10K to dist.. 30% figured in fer profit.. 7K fer actual cost with retail of 14-16.. .. jack ass... merc is makin about 20% over cost or more... on engines... parts could be more...
numbers are figured in VERADO sales to recoup VERADO investment... not total merc sales..

Al, I'm afraid that is delusional
No, I'm afraid not! The markup at the dealer level is more than 60% FACT!
Been there seen it!
May be not in the HP level. But it does exsist! But they do pay a hefty price for the dealer program and constant books and mercury requiered tools and classes.
none of it is free.
