Does anyone know if the Pennzoil Marine Lower Unit Gear Lube is compatible with Johnson motors? I checked with a couple local dealerships but I wasn't able to get a solid answer. One guy did tell me that the OMC brand that I currently use is unreliable ever since OMC got bought by Bombadier, and since the Pennzoil is cheaper and sold almost everywhere, I'd like to use it if I can.

If you had a Hydro-electric shift lower unit, no. Your manual specifies a minimum GL rating for your gear lube. That's all you really need to use, but....Because lower units are so expensive, I think the best High Performance lube you can buy needs to go inside. I always use 100% synthetic, and this Pennzoil 100% synthetic is pretty hard to beat. Worth the extra buck or 2. :D
