View Full Version : Mercury Rigging gurus,a few ?'s
I have a 1983 115 inline with a 8 prong harness and am using a 2003 merc control with a 8 prong harness.Where the harness plugs in under the cowl there are two wires hanging out at the connector. One is blue and one is green,i am assuming these go to the trim solenoid.ami right on that?I also have another pigtail harness at the controls that has a round connector with a half moon shape of 5 prongs.the color wires on that pigtail are 1 blk,1 brown with white stripe,1 tan with blue stripe,1 purple,1 gray(i'm guessing this is for the tach, trim guage and ?).There are also 4 wires with push pull type connectors at the controls, which i assume go to the trim n tilt.1 red,1 tan,1 blue with white stripe and 1 green with white stripe.I want to run a steering wheel mounted trim switch which has 1 green wire,1 white wire and 1 black wire.how do i hook all this up to get it to work properly?

ok harnes plugs in, wires are trim as you assumed, 1/2 moon is tack and dash harness.. not sure on remote rim, all the ones I have done had the red green blue wires on it......
what do i do with the 4 wires that are by the controls?red to power, brown to ground then hook the blue and green to the trim switch?thanks

Brown is temp, not ground.
Brown is temp, not ground.
is that the one in the harness plug or the wires that are out in the open?

tan isnt ground... its for the temp gauge. the red wire is an aux constant hot for a dashlight, etc. it already has power coming to it from the motor. the blue/green wires under cowl are for an aux. trim switch (like my motor has on the cowling)

dont worry about the small plug (right now)- its just redundant leads coming from the motor.

check to see if the 2 wires going to the pump are hooked up and function with a jumper wire to the battery...

well there is a splice in the harness,so tomorrow i am gonna check that out and make sure everything has a good clean contact.I.ll let you know by friday. As for the hoes, you might bite off more than you can chew lol:D
well i took the spilce apart and found a few wires that were not going to the same color wires on the other side of the splic.so do i just match the colors of the wires up and any left over just tape up? looks like they mixed two different harnesses as there is a few wires left over.

i would get a replacement harness cause the splices will lead to hastles down the road especially in the tach lead coming from the motor.. and since 2 different harnesses are spliced together I would personally feel better if I knew I didnt have to worry about the age difference in the 2 harnesses.. just my 2ts cen
