My film camera is a Nikon F70 and I would like to get a good quality digital camera that hopefully can make use of the two Nikon lenses I have. They are the Nikkor FAFD 28-105mm and the Nikkor FADF ED 70-300mm. I don't take a ton of pictures but I am fussy about the results I get.
Would the best choices be the D50 or D70s? Any input would be appreciated.

D70 = good.

I'm going to buy one soon...

Phil,

Like Chad said, the D70 is a great camera. It's capable of pro results and it will outperform Nikon's old flagship model, the D1x in just about every way except autofocus performance.

Both the D50 and D70/D70s are great cameras, but keep in mind one thing: The D50 has better high-ISO noise performance, likely due to more in-camera processing. There is a very slight loss of detail with the D50 as a result, but it will produce more 'punchy' images right out of the camera. My guess is because the target market for the D50 is less interested in heavy post processing of images.

Both of your lenses are fine for general photograhy - keep the 70-300 stopped down to F8 for best image quality. :)

I knew Gregory would be all over this Nikon thread. Get a Canon:D

Just kidding, listen to Greg he knows his stuff.

Chris, he already has Nikon lenses, so the choice between Nikon and Canon is obvious here. :)

Both systems are great - the only limitation being the photographer's skill, not the brand.

Thanks for the advice. Does it make sense to purchase only the camera body or buy as a kit with lens.

I'm sure Greg will chime in but he said this in the other thread

By the way, the 18-70 AF-S lens that is included in the D70 kit is a fantastic lens.

get the kit for the 18mm low end. your lens is about a 42mm with the 1.5x factor. i use my 18-37mm lens inside almost all the time. get the d70 is been rate very good. 100 better than canon [couldn't resist]

Have you even tried the Canon?

I think the Nikon D70 and Canon Rebel XT are very close in terms of features and performance. The Rebel XT edges the D70 very slightly in image detail, but most users will never notice this difference. The Rebel also claims to have better high-ISO performance, but my experience with both cameras suggests this is not the case.

I found the Nikon's autofocus system to be more accurate, especially in low light. The difference is minimal, but it does exist. No matter which camera system you choose, the main obstacle to achieving great results is learning the camera and photography techniques.

Never buy a camera off Ebay. Another line from the Gregory.
