I'm in the final stages of having a modified 260 built by Bob Garone. The book says to measure the pistons 1/2" up from the bottom of the skirt and 90* to the wrist pin. It should be 3.495" and wear shoulden't exceed .001". All the pistons are between 3.491 and 3.493. There is no noticable wear on the skirts and all the horizontal grooves still look good. Bob said these look new but are out of spec. I ordered new Molly's for safety but are the old pistons really garbage?? I was told you can get them bead blasted and recoated but that's just a temp. fix.

The other thing is: If the cylinders are 3.50" and the max cyl to piston clearance is .010" why couldn't you have the skirts wear down to 3.40"?

If you let the skirts wear too far, you will get piston slap, which is quite noisy and generally not good.
