Where can I find the power head #'s on my 1988 150 Mariner Magnum? The power head has been rebuilt or changed and I would like to varify what it is. I know that some of you guys can tell me what the motor is if I locate the block #'s. Also any info on the performance of this motor would be appreciated. Most important anything I might do to get some more HP out of it short of bolting on a 2.4-2.5 powerhead.

I found the block #'s after geting off my lazy but and cleaning the cases a bit. Block #B209887 and the carbs are WH40's. Can anyone tell me what this powerhead is and what kind of HP at what RPM it will do? Thanks for any referances or info in advance.

Thanks for letting me know us1. The cowl says Mag, but I don't know if it still is and if that makes any Diff. I thought that the Magnum turns a bit more RPM if it is a Mag. I'm getting about 5700 on my tach and have not hit the limiter yet or if I have I coulden't tell.

The carb 150 Magnums start at 0C276430 so it might just be a regular 150 HP.

that is a XR2 in mariner trim... sorry John I disagree. that SN is for a HP 5 petal carb mota with a CLE they built the ORIGINAL magnum 150(XR2) magnum 2 (XR4) and mag 3(XR6) as 150's.. its a 2.0 l factory mota not the high perf BP stuff...

as fer RPM 5700 is about all that is there unless you remove the timing retard and idle compensater.. do that and that motor is good to about 6500 RPM where its intake system chokes it out..

Damm NPARTIN you were up later than me last night!!! I thought I was night owl. I appreciate the input on my little 2.0. A couple of questions if you have the time to answer them. 5 petal mota w/ a CLE? What is the CLE. Also give me an idea where I could find the info on removing the timing retard and the removing the idle compansator as you mentioned in your post. I have a universal manuel, but it covers about 500 Diff. mota's.
If the moata is an XR2 does it put out more than 150hp? The mota is mounted on an 18' 1988 Crusader tunnel. The boat was made out here on the left coast in Orange county and appears to be a fairly heavy hull w/ four seats. I have yet to run across another boat like it on S&F, but I wish I could find another owner to compare notes with. My guess is that it was rigged w/ the 2.0 for insurance reasons and the Mariner gray matches the gelcoat. I live in Truckee so the boat runs at a horsepower robbing 6000 feet most of the time. I get about 62 on GPS here and about 68 when I take the rig down to the valley. I need a 250 bad, but my money tree diden't grow much this year!! Untill it does I have to make the best out of my 2.0 Thanks for your help.

You could be right, I used the Mercury Midas part software to look it up. It's not the detailed.

Okay the CLE is the gearcase, but what are the features of the CLE compared to a standerd. Forgive my IGNORANCE!!!

It’s for high-speed surface running. It has a solid propshaft rather than the stock two piece spun welded one. It has low water pickups and a longer aspect ratio to increase the blowout speed.

may it also be said that your motor has a std case...

You are correct in that my motor has the standard gearcase. Too bad, a low water pickup sure would be nice. Right now I have the motor up as high as I can get it and the prop shaft is still about 3-4 inches below the water line at full tilt with no H20 pressure problems. I will most likely buy a manuel jackplate this winter to get some more engine height. I would like a Hyd. Jackplate, but I can't see spending that much to get a bit more out of a 2.0. That cash needs to go towards a bigger mota. How about removing the timing retard that you mentioned? Another 500-700 RPM might allow me to spin a diff. prop.

I doubt you will get 500 RPM unless you hit 5700 @ less than WOT and the extra throttle gives ya nothing.. but I think it is worth disconnecting due to the fact that when the timing retards it can run ruch and screw up plugs and cause you some headaches when ya try to run over 5700..

How about a quick tip or two on how to disconnect the timing retard. Which module is it on the mota?

easiest way to describe where it is on yer mota is to use mercs parts website (www.mercurypartsexpress.com) that whay you know forsure where it is BUT it should be mounted on the portside block behind the timing arm and throttle linkage on the top of the block but use yer serial ## at the parts express site to besure and also you will need to set yer max timing over again and set it to 25-27* at full advance..
