What does the Bridgeport designation refer to? I know that they are high HP motors, but I don't know what Bridgeport refers to. Thanks.

The term Bridgeport refers to a vertical 1/4" wide vertical bridge that is part of the cylinder wall that runs down the center of the exhaust port.
The reason for this bridge is because of the extreme width of the exhaust port. The bridge keeps the piston rings from bulging outward and getting snagged on the pistons upstroke.

Thanks for the info Carter. I have a motocross background and have seen this kind of port set up on my dirtbikes. Does the Bridgeport make the motor a high performance motor or do all or most of the Mercs have this feature. I have only been into outboards for about a year now so forgive me if I am asking basic questions and thanks for the info.

During its day the 2.4 Bridgeport was definately at the top of the food chain for hiperformance outboards. If you find a nice one and decide to buy it try real hard to get a digital ECU box for it if it does not already have one. This one item will make a sometimes tempermental fast motor perform like a new Lexus.

Another characteristic of the Bridgeport is that it's loud.... Very loud.:)
And that's not a bad thing.:D

loud is in the eye of the beholder... nuthin is loud enough.. unless a 7000 watt sterio cant be heard above it..
