Does anyone know anything about the pro max 150. I believe merc made one in the 90's. Where they good motors? I was thinking about one for my 89 16' checkmate Predictor.

I had a 150 ProMax SS . I loved it . Pushed my Vector to to a best of 90.3 mph with consistent 88's and 89's . I believe this was a highly under rated motor .

um... ya they were more like 200 actual hp.. there is one around here on a 20' Eliminator cat that runs side by side with a 220 laser on the same hull good engine for sure.

Bass and Walleye Boat, August 96
19'3" Gambler Inimidator
150 Magnum III 66.7
150 Pro Max 67.1
Not much difference. Of course the Magnum III, same as XR6, probably also made more HP than a vanilla 150.
The advantages of the Pro Max
CLE gearcase is stronger than stock
solid mounts
6500 max rpm rating vs 5500
I'd be surprised if the Pro Max 150 made more than 165 HP. The bar graph in the article shows the 150 Pro Max at 158 propshaft HP. There is no mention of who ran the dyno test.

a dyno run on one would for sure settle things but I think they were stronger than that and were over the 10% rule by just a little....maybe a detuned 175????

Good motor ; CLE high performance gear case, solid mounts, fuel injected, and a 6700 RPM rev limiter.
If you can find one in good condition, buy it. It will make that 16 foot fly when you get it set up right with a good prop.

yea, but the magIII might have had the small gearcase, which is definately different than a short fat CLE.

Both the Mag III and the Promax 150 were tested with 2:1 Torquemasters
No data was given, but the Torquemaster was said to be faster than the 1.78 small gearcase on the Gambler.

Sam Baker had one with the small "XR6" 1.78 gearcase on my Rapid Craft when he first rigged it, he said it ran 80-82 on the speedo. My 150 XR6 with the regular 1.87 fishing case pushes the same boat 78 on the same gauge. At 125 lbs. I'm a lighter driver and that helps, but the fatter gearcase on my motor probably slows it down too. Either way, I'd say the two motors are within 10 hp of each other.
I saw Sam's old 150 ProMax push an Allison SS2000 at 86 mph on radar. Bill Gohr was there and looked in the holes, it still had the stock ports.

I think the big advantage to the promax is you can twist it higher, so you could theoretically run a smaller pitch prop, and have better acceleration without losing much if any top end over a regular 150.
Plus you can always add an SVS, tuner, compression, and the PCU thing Brucato does, and raise the compression. That ought to perk it up a little bit.
If I could find one I would probably buy it for my boat, since it is only rated for a max 175. I think I could get alot better results starting out with a promax verus a regular 150 or EFI.
There was one advertised for sale, I think it was Bill Gohr who had it, in the for sale section a while ago.
I recall the BWB test of those years ago, and the advantage in pure speed between a promax and a regular efi was not that significant, unless you run a lighter hull. Put one on an Allison and it would probably run well, slap it on a Ranger, and it might not run so well. It would definitely run bad with a CLE on a ranger.
If you find 2, PM me.

Don't forget that the B&W test did not compare the standard 150 to the Pro Max. It was a comparison of the Mag III to the Pro Max, on a Gambler Bass Boat, both with Torquemaster gear cases. If the test hasd been run on an Allison, would the small gear case on the Mag III made it faster than a CLE Pro Max?
I've often wondered about the 150 high performance vs 175 question.
Mark Smiley put a tuner on a 150 Pro Max and ran his SS2000 well into the 90's, so those motors can scream. Even if tuners don't do anything:)

I checked all the motors in the for sale section, and did not see the promax.
It would be nice to see a souped up 175. Real nice for us 18 foot bass boat guys. :D

Predictor project is almost done. Still looking for a promax 150.

I love those 150 and 200 PM's from the 90's...yes it would be cool to find one...all the Hiperf requirements in 6500RPM stock package :) :) sweet
We ran a 200PM on a 20 foot Vegas to 88 mph on a nice fall day :)

I own one - well actually a mariner 150 supermagnum. I have had it since 99, 225 hours so far, no problems at all. Only performance mods have been a 200tuner (stock one is as long as the center section), thinner head gaskets that raised compression a tiny bit and fishin motor 5 petal rubber reed cages with fiber reeds. My guess is that it's an 185 now, based on the fact that I run a 2 inch larger prop than when I first got it. I don't spin it beyond 6200 and rarely do that. Heck all I do now is pull the kids around. With the new reeds this summer, it idle's better and has punchier low end. Good Motor. Ditch the plastic geared oil injection.

Mine has seen 84.7 GPS once & even though it was wind aided that day it still had more in it (ran low 80's all day that day with that prop). I just didn't have the seat time or the balls cause I was sticker washin big time. I wanted to trade up to a PM 225 right after I got it but now I won't trade for nuthin. Run consistent high 70's with a fishin load (& my fishin load is purty heavy). Gas consumption is awesome in all aspects & when I find the right prop & setup I think I can run high 80's consistent. On a light hull it's a bad azz mota.
