I just purchased a pair of mariner 300's for my 28' powerplay. My mechanic said that the fleetmasters will actually be faster than the sportmaster's. Is this true? The midsection length is 25" and the motors are mounted on an armstrong bracket. Thanks.

Yes, the Fleetmasters are faster on a V-bottom.

Why would the fleetmaster be faster on a vee?

I don't think it is so much a V thing, but a speed thing, from how I understand it because the sportsmaster has more surface area it actually has more drag than a round nose lower. In boat that top out under 85 the fleetmaster (or the torq master round nose but with low water pickups and fat shaft) is supposed to be better, but higher than that the round nose lower blows out so you need the sportsmaster to be able to go any faster.
That being said I am running a sportsmaster but would like try a torqmaster
I agree
Over 85...Sportmaster
Under 85 Fleet master
over 120 the SSM's rule

Torque masters or fleet masters?
S&F did a great feature awhile back detailing the difference. I tried the link and it didn't work, maybe it will for you. I agree with blkmtrfan and T2X. The Sportmasters pointed nose cone actually produces more drag at lower speeds. It will do this on a cat or vee. I'm having my new boat rigged with a 225 Pro XS with the Torquemaster. Maybe a hydrodynamics expert out there can explain.

The calc on these numbers is 121.2 @ zero slip. You're running less tthan 1% slip.
