Hotboat needs to showcase some "outboard" boats and get back to the roots the magazine was built on.The average joe just cant afford a 40 footer.I know this subject has been tossed about before but there is nothing practical in that magazine anymore..only my opinion..........Rob

There was a post about this a couple of month ago. It started just after they said they where going back to there roots and where going to do more O/B stuff. I havn't seen it and I look through all the tima at the stores.
I do read Family& Perfomance Mag they do some good OB stuff ( I would like to see more) but believe they are on the correct track. This month th3ere is an artical about the ST.Johns river. It just came yesterday and I put it next to the office chair for reading tommorrw morning during my mron ritual I'll get back to ya on how it was.

here's my ?
What happen to your big change and why dont you have more O/B stuff expecially with all the new products??

It kinda seems to me that hotboat has been doing what they said. They have showcased quite a few readers rides that were o/b's and have somewhat gotten back to their roots. Just this last issue had coverage of the CBBB or classic boat beach bash held at the Avi in Laughlin. Unfortunately, there were only 2 o/bs there. They have also done some complete Merc history articles and tests on the newer 4 strokes. I'm not sayin the mag is great now, but it is a west coast based mag, and they are selling to their consumers. If you haven't seen an o/b in hotboat for years, then you must not have seen hotboat in years. Also, racer writes a column, he's not the editor.

If I'm wrong than I'm sorry the last time I read it was when the editor said they where making changes......... My subscription ran out and I was very fustrated with them by then so I kinda walked away....... I should give them another chance if you say they have changed for the better. How ever I am on the east coast and other than S&F I don't know of a eastcoast mag I can get at the stands. I like Family & Perfomance Boat Mag and they just moved there headQuarters to Tenn. so we'll see what happens. I may end up reading Bass Masters soon if I want to read about O/B's (lol)

I am located in Australia and would like to know how to measure the best C.O.G(centre of gravity in my outboard boat.Should it sit flat and level whilst on the water at a standstill or is it ok that it seems to have a lot of weight at the rear. What sort of handling characteristics are common with a boat that is at this attitude?

I just sent 5 questions to you via the link on the Hotboat website.

Unfortunately I don't subscribe any more. Can you post here if any of my questions get answered? Then I could buy the issue, assuming I could find it. Hotboat is pretty rare in Windsor Ontario bookstores.

questions in brief

1) Suggested engine heght for 11' TNT with 25 HP Merc
a) best for 400 lb, ie two men
b) best for 200 lb, ie one man or two kids

2) Do OMC over hub cleavers for 75 Stinger short shaftss fit the same size Mercs? What about thru hub cleavers? Do they interchange?

3) If I remove the rev limiter from my 1990 70 Nissan 2 cyl should I run richer oil and/or higher octane fuel. 50:1 and 87 octane now

4) Would a 22" large ear chopper, small ear chopper, or yamaha drag work as a ski prop on my SS2000? What would be best? I use a 24" Laser now and I need more pull for 200 lb skiiers. I also need a safer prop for over 60 mph. I have had the bow drop abruptly. I tried a 24 Trophy and it planed much slower than the Laser.

5) What was the connection between Stoker and Baker? What are the differences between the boats? How should my friend set up his restored Baker tunnel, assuming he ever rigs it? He has two options, a 200 Merc and a 2.5 Carb. How fast could it run with each motor?

thanks

We all have our feelings on this magazine so if you don't want to help don't but then don't bitch when they cancel the O/B tech collum too.
And yeah, you need to goto HB to pitch them.
Give the guy a break. He is one of our own after all.

I agree with Gary on this one. When one of the best of all time--no matter if you love the Mercs or Jon/Rudes--asks for input from this forum, we need to come up with some questions you would like to have answered.

Some of the questions/comments here are about the overall content of the magazine. Al has NO CONTROL over the content and is the Outboard Tech Editor. What's in the rest of the book, outside his column is at the discretion of the Editor in Chief and or Publisher. The only thing he can do is write a quality response to questions submitted which he always does.

My Talon was in Hot Boat back in Feb 1993. I spoke with Brett Bayne a couple of weeks ago and he said he wanted to do a before and after story on it since the resto. I sent him a cd with hundreds of photos along the way. Don't know if it will happen or not but we will see. :D

Ive been doing a little research. It seems that the entire indudastry is giving the "hipo" outboard market about a 3 percent share. Now I think it may be more because ask any bass boat guy and he is more than estatic to say his is a "hipo" type motor. the bass boat market is much more than 3 percent.most bassers are pleasure boaters also. I don't know if there is a lean to do away with outboards because of emisions (they are all clean) or just a market misevaluation.maybe it's the way outboard boats are priced, you get to see the cost of the boat, motor and trailer. With a stern drive you never see the actual drive train cost so the sticker shock isn't there. If walmart stopped selling it's 3 percent share items they would one by one lose all sales. eventually everything at some point would become a 3 percent share item.instead of looking at it as a small item the maufacturers need to turn that 3 percent into a higher number, not just give up. Oh crap, I forgot, all companies are run by number crunching morons that have that job because most of them are not capable of getting off thier dead rears and actuall do something constructive in their lives(if any of you guys is a number cruncher I apologize) ,let alone to try to take a risk and try to sell a concept.
Sometimes numbers and sales can become a burden to a company."If you make them, people will come"!Ok look at Hot boat, lots of OB guys have gone, If they really had the brains they would strongly go after that market , even, if they think theyre sneeky, and get all the OB guys back. thier writers, camera men etc are on staff anyway, look at the new subsribtions they would generate. Some sales geek could claim fame for doing this and probably get that promotion he's been looking for.Just my 2 cents

Racer,
As you probably know the '06 250XS Mercury runs on 87 octane fuel and the earlier years require 91 minimum. According to a news release on Mercury Racing's website they did this without any loss of performance on the '06 models. Can the earlier models be reprogrammed to run on 87 octane?

How about an article about 10% Ethanol in Fuel and the effects it has on our boats. There was one in the November issue of Boating Magazine entitled "Sticky Situation" The article had some accurate info but they were inaccurate in stating that it is only a winter blend. The article was based on Long Island where 10% ethanol is mandatory year round. The Bush energy bill seeks to make it a nationwide mandate. Tax dollars are being used to build ethanol processing plants.<O:p</O:p

There are many many cons to this stuff in the marine environment, and I'm glad to see one boating mag has addressed some of them. I'd like to see more.

Yes I have a vested interest in at least keeping it out of marinas since ethanol destroys Skater fuel cells and has become a crisis on Long Island for Skater owners.<O:p</O:p

Boaters should also be aware of this blend. It's hydroscopic (attracts water to your fuel cells), it's corrosive to metals it comes in contact with, it is a solvent to rubber seals and gaskets and has a cleaning effect on fuel systems that can cause engine failure....<O:p</O:p

Some research that I did on the subject is available in this thread as I debated the topic with a couple of farmers (note: ethanol is derived from corn crops).

I just noticed something.

Racer requested questions for Hot Boat on 10/25

He didn't specify where to send them and hasn't been back here since. Is he taking these suggestions?

Maybe have Hot Boat do an article on setup of one of Randy's Liberators? And of coarse a great big plug for S&F!! One comment!... I was speaking to a friend of mine who works for Rex marine, he stated that some of the area lakes won't allow outboards due to there high emmisions. If it smokes they won't let you stroke.. He claims the boat police check this fairly close. Just might be a reason for the low outboard interest from Hot Boat. There is also an abundance of tree huggers out there. They are a national magizine, and other areas of the USA don't have the emmision control like California. Just my 2 cents.

The mag runs about two months behind but am already working on some of the questions.

HP Only a couple of lakes are a problem and if you have a one star rated engine you are allowed on if any gas power is allowed.

When it's slow like that they should let you just write about some of the events and/or competition "back in the day". Now that would be interesting!

It seems like such a waste to see Al Stoker explaining how to fog a motor. At least from the once or twice I looked at that rag. Also, too much T & A if you ask me and not enough O & B :p
