View Full Version : Can too much height take away bow lift?

Playing with setup on my 84' Procraft with Modded 2.4. I have put on a bob's nose cone and raised the engine about 2". I am still about 2" below the pad with about 14" of setback (including the step and the 5.5" jack plate).

I am not getting the bow lift I was getting before. I even switched props. I tried a 26" chopper that had extra cup. Still no lift.

I am considering a 10" jack plate as my boat sits fairly level at rest. Extra setback should add bow lift, right?

5.5 is good and safe, but probably not enough to max things out - be mindful of the strength of the transom on that boat.. I ran 6" for a long time and there's only a marginal gain to be made on most bass boats by switching amounts of setback. There will be a noticeable difference in the attitude of your boat when you go to a 10". You're right as you increase setback it increases how high you can raise the engine and still maintain bite. It depends on what prop/hull/lower unit etc you're running as to what height that point comes at. For example, I have to run my tempest lower in the water than my trophy...the trophy will bite till the engine loses whater pressure. I wouldn't think a chopper would be the right prop for your boat, what else have you tried?

On my Vegas XT....the higher I raise the motor, the more trim it takes to get the bow to fly right.

i have a 18' fish and ski skeeter of course, and i am running12hydo jack plate with a worked 24 chopper, i have mine set up so at wot i have bow lift and there is a 20 foot long tail of water about 1 to 2 feet tall, but while i am putting aroung it falls on its face and creates a great rooster tail and yes it looks cool, i have to trim down to get rid of the prop slip. i guess its all in what you want to do. jack withit a 1/4 inch at a time until you loose bow lift. the boat is goiny to run where it wants to. as far as set back i would think the further back the better because it gets the motor into clean water, but your boat may not want a lot of set back.

this is my $.02 worht hope it helps

hydrasports,

I have a 2.4 with bob's nose cone on a manual jack. Before the nose cone I ran a 25 pitch OMC Renegade prop. Boat worked good and consistently hit 60+ with two guys and full fishing load. The boat would chine walk just over 60 mph but was manageable. One morning under perfect conditions by myself I hit 67mph gps.

Since then I have switched to a 23 pitch OMC Renegade to increase rpms. I was running this prop to 6000 rpm under normal load. I melted a piston this summer and put some more hp's into it while rebuilding it (cherry 2.4 project) I also added the nose cone.

I am thinking that the nose cone was a waste with my current setup. Looking back at it the boat performed better with the engine lower. If I make it out again this year I will drop the engine and work my way up. I am probably 3-4 inches higher right now than when I achieved my best top end. If my speed goes up, I think I will increase my setback for spring.

The transom is strong as I rebuilt it about 4 years ago, I added bigger longer knees and extra bracing horizontally across the face of the transom. I will probably use 1/4" aluminum plate on the outside of the transom for extra strenth.

Lots of pissin around yet...

Maybe you should have held on to the 25" you sold me! LOL. I know on my Checkmate as soon as I get above 2.5" below the pad, my bow comes down and I lose speed as well.

That 25" worked really good on my boat but it couldn't handle 3 people. It would drop the rpms and labor the engine. Since then I have added some substantial horsepower, probably could turn it now...Oh well I'm thinkin I want to find somebody to trade me a trophy for my 26" chopper. I love the way the boat takes off with that prop though;lots of rpms immediately, lots of noise, lots of water shootin everywhere, and up and gone right now.

My Tempest runs like that, fast out of the whole and carries the weight of the boat well - fast and flat. I've got a 23 Tempest I'll let you borrow if you want to try b4 you buy. You could probably turn a 25 like me, but at least it would give you an idea. I really haven't seen how high my 2.5 will turn the 25 yet, but it'll take it past 6k.

By the way, My 25 Tempest will carry the load with full livewells, gas tank (52gallons), and all fishing gear plus 3 guys.

LOL...I haven't completely followed all of your "cherry 2.4" project - did you do some exhaust mods? Sounds like it came out pretty good. I think you have to love a feeling of trying to hold the motor back when it's coming out of the hole - I know that's how my 2.5 is. Big improvement over my old 2liter LOL.:D

Hydrasports,

I did some light exhaust chest work, ported pistons, rubber coated reed cages with carbon fibre reeds, velocity stacks, exhaust relief, removed the can, removed oil injection, removed idle stabilizer/spark advance module and oh what a difference. There is definately more HP's in the motor, I just need to get it set up.

Thanks for the offer on the prop, I have one available to me to try. I really want to get my hands on a trophy.

Has anybody heard about Mercs new prop called the Enertia. They have a new patent pending on some new alloy called E7 Alloy which is 4 times stronger than conventional stainless, hence it can take more stress which allows for thinner blades and more aggressive rake angle...

My brother haz a version ov tha "Cherry 2.4" on a 17' Laser basser...He iz on ov those NEVER SATISFIED boaters!!...He wants it to be tha fastest boat on tha water, but when I tell him sum stuff he kan do, he hollers about it JUSS BEIN A BASS BOTE!!...When I done the mods to tha motor, he tried to run the same prop...He couldn't understand why the motor iz pozed to make more HP, but kan't turn the same prop!!...He pizzed and moaned for 6 months because he lost MPH, and RPM after the Mods, but he wouldn't lissen to me about try'in more props...He finally gave up on the ideer that Jesus made that trophy wheel for hiz laser, and anythang else would surely send him straight to HELL.......His boat would only run 72 to 74 with hiz "Holy Prop"...I finally talked him into try'in one ov my drag wheelz, ju8ss to show him what a reel hole shot felt like...I put my 26yamaha on and the motor turned 7400rpm, instead ov the majik 6100 the trophy turned...I didn't have a GPS, but hiz speedo showed 84mph vs the trophys 74!!!....He haz since tried 20 diffrent props, and the best allround prop he uses iz a stock, outta tha box 24 yamaha!!!....So never say never, Juss try az many az U kan...Kuz sumtimes the junk that won't work on anuther bote juss like yours, iz the bess thang for U, since sliced bread!!!...

man i'll try 50 props if i don't have to pay $200/prop to "try" em

I wuzn't sayin that tha tempest is tha cat's azz of props overall, it gives a pretty good balance of performance on a bass boat- no way in hell it's tha fastest....duh. Hook me up wit 1 of dem drags....

I'll say this...just my 2cents...trophy's suck

Hey T-Rex,

As always thanks for the tip. One quick question though, at what rpm do I need to spin this motor to make the most power. I had been runnin 6000rpm before the mods...

T-REX

Tha project motor seemed to make good HP in the midrange...it pulled like a 260 from 3500-7500...It juss kinna spun rpm to 8300 or so....8500 wuz it'z limit....U won't have a problem tell'in when she runs outta breath...the tach will slow the same place ever time!!
