Just came across your reply in these forums about a Barkley Young boat. Thought I was the only one that had one until now. Am curious to know a little more about them as I bought this used.

Mine has a 40HP 4cyl Mariner Magnum with T/T. With a 15p prop I recorded 42mph with just me aboard. With the 13p prop I can consistantly run 32-33mph. Members on other boards have said that is next to impossible for a 40hp motor on this type of boat. Glad to see someone else getting comparible results. 40mph sure seems fast in that small boat. I use it mostly for fishing and pulling the kids around on the tube or skis. I added trim tabs this year to eliminate the excessive porpoising I was getting. Big improvement.

Look forward to hearing from you.

Yes, I have had the 13' boat since 1984. The early models had the steering
infront of the rear seat [mine]. The later models had the steering infront of the middle seat. The boat is not as strong as a Boston Whaler and the bottoms go soft over the years which greatly reduces the performance, it keeps the nose down. We had 5 of them in are area on the lake. Largest motor was a fifty. Most are 30 hp and 40 hp. 4 of the 5 are still there. There was a 15 ft model as well. I have only seen one of them. Good boat for the money. In 1984 boat with 30 hp Yamaha was $3000. To date I have not had a repair to the boat or the motor. This boat is used alot! It is our main transportation. It owes us nothing. Keep the weight in the middle [gas tank and battery] and boat will run better. Short boats will generally take awhile to settle down. These plane at 18 mph. Good luck.

Glad to hear from you Hounddog. This is my first boat (used) and I'm very happy with it. The only complaint I have with this boat (13ft) is that it sits really low in the water at the stern. With motor 180Ib's and me 190Ib's I only have about 4-5" freeboard at the stern. Have taken on water a couple times over the stern on lake simcoe. I did move the battery up under the console which is infront of the rear seat and I keep the gas tank forward of the middle seat. Made a big difference in performance.

I think you mentioned the weight of the boat at 450Ib's, is that correct? Does your's have the two drains thru the transom. I think one of mine is leaking into the hull and not sure how to repair it. Will be a project next spring. I've considered moving the console up to the middle seat to better distribute the weight. Do you think its worth the effort?

The boat seems ultra-stable at any speed which I really like. Nice and flat for fishing as well. With the addition of the trim tabs this boat jumps right up on plane in about 3 second with no bow rise at all. Not able to trim up much without ventilating but I think I still need to adjust the pressures on the trim tabs. Without the tabs it would porpoise badly and was almost undriveable. Not really a rough water boat is it. I really take a beating in the waves but I like the spray in the face :D.

How do you mean the bottoms go soft? Does the foam core get powdered?

Any 13' boat will have its moments on a big lake. Yes, my boat has the 2 drains. No, it is not worth moving the helm. You could move your battery to the bow storage compartment. That will shift the balance. Try a cupped prop. That will help the blow-out. Its the foam core that weakens which causes the bottom to flex. You likely notice the floor move by your feet when you hit waves. I have not seen the floor out of one of these boats. There likely is no solid keel in the boat. It flexs but doesn't break. Ours will be 22 years old next summer. It gets 5 gallons of gas every weekend. Its the water taxi, fishing boat, kids boat and the only boat the dogs like to ride in. Like the battery bunny it just keeps going and going. Their no speed boat, no classy whaler, but the 4 in our area are all trouble fee and the newest is 1986. Thats all I can tell you.
