Hi all,
I am looking at a pair of 1999 Mariner 300's. They have 40 original hours. What do you guys think? I have heard mixed reviews.
but they do have alot more tork if your putting them on a heavy boat !!

They are going on a 28' powerplay. We occasionally load the boat up with a bunch of people.

Go with the mariners, they make 285 at the prop. Thell provide more than enough torque to get that boat moving nice. Plus there much more reliable and have a longer life span than a 2.5 280

Think they will be better than my old 2.5 1996 carb motors?

It depends i would rather have the 300's due to there reliability, Torque, oil injection and on your boat they will most likely put up a bigger top end number. The 280's i would rather have for an offshore race motor.

What year were the 300's notorious for blowing up?

Does anyone have any pics of a mariner 300?

The most important question: Do i have to mix the oil with the gas like my old 2.5s with these motors??

They dont, the 3ltr is very reliable. The 2.5 need rebuilt every few hundred hours... the 300s dont.

Who's got a 2.5 with a few hundred hours on them? ;)

sound like a lot of stern weight for a powerplay. Guess they would be o.k. if you never jumped waves or anything. I like the 2.5's better. Their power to weight ratio is superior. Thats why everyone uses them on offshore type boats, not the 3.0 L as much. They do use the 3.0 L on the bigger hull fish boats though, cause they have more raw torque for bigger loads(fuel, dive gear, fish gear, radar arches, electronics, people), which your little boat does not need. I have a pair of 2000 mariner 300's on a 30 ft shadowcat and love the engines.
great power and torque-oil injected so no mess- rpm is a lot lower than 2.5 or 2.4 and they will last a lot longer- and if you blow a powerhead they are
actually cheaper to buy new than 2.5 powerhead from merc.
-great top end- love the sound- deeper sound and not as noisey compared to 2.4-2.5 for on the lake and back seat passengers
-I highly recommend - - I love them (underneath the cowl-all merc anyway )
