View Full Version : What's a 2.4EFI Bridgeport worth?

I am looking to buy a used Talon 25 which has twin 2.4EFI Bridgeport engines. I might want to fit two new Mercury 250XS engines. What are the old Bridgeport engines realistically worth?

What are the good and bad points of the 2.4EFI Bridgeport engines if I decide to keep them?

This is the boat, it's the only Talon 25 in Europe I think.

I sold my fresh, mildly modified BP EFI for $2800 a year or so ago. The rest of the package depends on what you have for legs (bass style or offshore), and lower units.

Flavio,
The text below is a message to me from GPI in Minnesota about 2.4 Bridgeports. Randy has a great reputation here for his work with outboards. If you have 2.4's don't be too quick to dump 'em. Mine has run hard for years with no trouble.

Bill,

Sorry I took so long to reply. Sometimes I forget to check the PM spot on S&F. In the past we ran some 2.4 bridgeport motors on the tunnels when I was with the Arcadian team. Built it as a project because the 2.5s were restricted and the 2.4 was not. (loop hole) The last one we did made over 300 hp and actually was faster (about 3/4 a second a lap) than the 2.5s we had. The problems we over came were 1) head gasket leakage/failure and 2) piston skirt cracking. We made some o-ring heads and that took care of that problem. The pistons, we had them cast from a Japanese co. that makes small batches. I turned that little thing 9800 for over a 100 laps that weekend. Pretty impressed.

I have a customer that runs one on an Allison Gran Sport. He has pump gas heads and doesn't turn it much over 7600. It runs about the same as the 2.5 guys around here with that boat. Not faster, but not slower either. He is now going on his 4th season of this, so that is the key. A 2.5 would have come apart by now. So if there is an advantage it's that....with the right parts you can make good horsepower and have, what I feel, is better reliability. I really like the 2.4. If you choose to keep the 2.4 the same basic things the 1/2 port 2.5 gets works wonders on the 2.4. It gives it a nice heathy boost. But keep in mind the pistons, they are the weak link. I would suggest replacement to keep it happy. They aren't to bad, about $140 if I remember correctly. The head gaskets aren't a prob on mild heads. We were running 190 psi compression and that is the problem in itself.

Hope this gets you thinking both ways..

Randy

Besides being VERY THIRSTY... my 2.4 runs great!! Paid $2500.00 for it with an offshore mid and CLE lower. Its a very low hour 1991 EFI but had been sitting for quite some time. I've gone through it checking everything and had Pearland Marine do the same for a second opinion. It pulls very hard to 8600 with the rev limit box removed.
