i'm sleeping and the wife wakes me up and says someones in the back yard!!! it's 5:30 am i throw on my shorts grab the 7 shot 357 turn on all the lights and see nothing CRACK!!! i hear something by the boat i open the window to hear and see better......CRACK!!! what the fuc* is going on out there oh **** i notice the motors trimmed up and has apparently crushed the fairing.....is some one stealing my prop???
CRACK!!! CRACK!! what the fuc* ............it dawns on me that the motor is trimming up on it's own!!!!!
i go out with gun in hand and look around for anyone trying to get over the fence, and i hear the trim pump binding and i jump aboard and disconnect the battery, look around some more and realize the noises were from this and not a person in the yard i come in and calm wendy a bit and ponder......a knock on the door, WHO IS IT!!! the neighbor says he heard the tearing in my backyard and his wife called local security, i told him all is ok the trim pump took apon itself to trim up and crush the fairing, some kind of short, then the cops show up and i tell them all is ok
i call Big-D to ask how to bleed the pump ASAP he leads me through it and the motor is down but he said TAKE A PICTURE AND POST IT:D so hear it is
WHAT A MORNING!!!!!!!

Talon, I'm sorry!!!!
First for your disaster
and secondly that I thought I had a disaster.
Damn man that did some damage. So sorry to see it. Kathy fell in love with yer rig, she's gonna be bummed when she sees this.
Thats no way to wake up! I thought of puting in a battery disconnect switch during the re-build......think I will.
Ya gonna fix it or get another? Is the motor cowl OK?
Rickracer
02-11-2002, 07:16 AM
He's gonna have to fix it, it's a one off, by Skip, LOL. He said the cowl pin is bent back about an inch, but the cowl itself looks ok. He's definitely gonna have to re-do that fairing though.
Talon2.5
02-11-2002, 07:32 AM
the cowling has some stress cracks on the sides, it was pushed back an inch and a half the cowling pin stopped it from pushing further back and bent the heck out of the pin, the fairing........well i definately will have some major work to do there!!
just more **** i have to get done!!! the fairing is removable so i can take it off to do the work  but not any time soon for the fairing but the cowling i will look at after work today, and figure out where the short is
scott, the way i stopped it was the battery shut off switch, so put one in buddy!!
well off to work geeeeeeez what a monday morning!!!

Come on Skip you got a battery switch and you don't use it? Man I was sitting here one night and heard a starter run and a motor just pop off then it stopped. I went out to see thinking someone was messing with a customers boat and didn't find anything so I went back inside. About a half hour later I heard the noise again but this time the motor kept running. The key switch shorted out and had to pull the coil wire to kill the motor. the starter was still turning so I pulled the battery cable. That boat now has a disconnect for power.

Glad it didn't turn out to be somebody trying to rip off your prop or worse Skip. Good thing that hapend on land too. I've wonderd about this sort of thing hapening at speed. You might recall my story of somebody in my back yard trying to rip off my lower unit last summer. The cops had caught him in the act. He pleaded guilty but wouldn't rat his partner. The clown got one month in prison and a year probation.

Sorry about the boat, but it could have been worse. This happened to an allison at the toys for tots run. His trimmed up at the dock. He was lucky it could happen at 90 + mph.

REAL problems aren't the ones you can solve with money or time.
I had that happen to me at speed in the V-King. Scared the S#!+ out of me. Course top speed at the time was only 78 mph, but if a gust just happened to appear.....ooooooooooooh, NOT good. Switch in the shifter went bad on me.
Ever since then, I regularly clean the connectors to make sure at least they don't decide to NOT work when I need them to. New trim motors are the rule. I'll never have another fixed. It might decide to fix me.
Hope the repair goes smoothly.
Yo Scott, you busy Thurs PM? The Estranged has the girls for dinner. I could bring some Molson Golden and Guinness:) get a little ;) which would lead to :p and then :o JK, I don't get sloshed. Sure would like to hang out w/ ya and see the Baja!

that happened to me @ 75mph.
it rained the night before but the bow switch didn't short until i was almost wide open. the trim switch boot was cracked and letting water in. by the time you realize what's happening, it is very difficult to stop without getting swamped. i just shut off, ran to the front until the wave hit, then ran to disconnect the battery. scared the hound out of my partner.
in the picture, your boat looks wet. probably the same thing happened to you. i check and replace my trim switch boots more often.

Skip , that happened to me when I had my 21 skater, it rained coming home from the Glen the relay got wet,but mine went the other way , it was stuck in the down position, I had to disconnect the battery to stop it!!!!  Bummer dude hopes its a easy repair,
Glad you didn't have a V-8 hanging on the back of that thing it would have gone through the stringers ;) :D
What a drag, Skip. :( Wish you lived closer --- Brad is pretty handy at fixing those kinds of things.
We did have a friend that had a similar situation back in the Mod-VP days. Jerry Ditzig was towing his Mod-VP all the way from Houston to the St. Louis Grand Prix races, and stowed quite a bit of his stuff in the driver's cockpit for the trip.
He was able to fit a few lawn-chairs in the boat seat, but sometime during the trip the chairs fell against the steering wheel trim switches, and trimmed the motor all the way to the sky ---- absolutely smashing the cowling as it did.
By the time he reached St. Louis, the trim solenoid was totally burnt, but thankfully that was all that burned. He was able to fix the cowling (or he might have borrowed one from another Mirage Mod-VP driver).
But then -- after about 13 laps @ 100 mph, he descovered he had two stow-ways on board. One tiny white kitten and one tiny black kitten -- together they sort of looked like a checkered flag!
Whenever you think things can't get any worse is usually when you get the best surprise of all ----- And sure enough -- Jerry won the St. Louis Grand Prix ModVP class!~~
So Skip -- whenever things seem to be thier worst, it might mean that cool stuff is soon to come your way.
BTW: The picture of Jerry and his kittens under the checkered flag made it to the National Enquirer and the Star -- but that's another story...... ;)

I've heard of this happening before. In none of the cases did the overheat breaker kick in on the trim motor.
I considered a limit switch but now I'm definately putting in 2 (up & down). A normally closed switch wired into the pumps wiring, not the trim circuit, would shut off the pump if over traveled. I just have to think of simpler method than running large gauge wires to the switch.
I have a shut off switch but forget to use it and its no good. The limit switches would also allow you to move the OB to its stops without a gauge or watching it.

update:
just got home and checked damage, cowling has a small crack in the side and some stress cracks around the pin setup nothing severe there:D i already sraightened the pin :D
the fairing i built, well...........if i built it once i can do it again, it's pretty well screwed up but i can unbolt it and put it aside for repairs later on, it was kinda close to the new style cowling anyway, when i made the fairing i made it to fit the 2.4 offshore cowl distance so i guess i can shorten it now ;)
looks like rickracers omc sticker will be history now  (i only put it on there for his benefit :D ) oh oh oh i know now he can be pissing on OMC GODS  hehehehehehe nah it wont go back on, as a matter of fact yesterday i took shore pounder with me on east lake and we were talking and i told him i was gonna take all the graphics off anyway due to them fading and looking rough so it's gonna happen sooner than i had planned
like Big-D said.............it coulda been worse and the trim motor overheat and catch on fire
i'll put myself back in fiberglass fabricating mode and maybe make it a little better than it was :D

If you get time tonight Skip, give me a call. I got an idea on that fairing you may like. You can keep the spacing the way it is and with a little engineering, make a trick fairing that everyone's gonna want to copy.

Sorry to see the mess the motor trim made of your boat. You seem to have more than your share of bad luck. My luck hasn't been the best either lately. Picked up a new trailer in Ocoee for my racing jet ski last week. Made it all the way back to Melbourne when a dumb woman rear ends it while I was stopped at a red light...in broad daylight....said "I didn't see it!!" Better days ahead??

One of my promax twins did the same thing a few months back a neighbor kid who we let swim in the lake behind the house came to the door and said one of your engines is making a funny noise.I went out the right engine was trimed up all the way and motor was still running I jumped in and shut off the battery, the trim motor was smoking hot.It busted the bolts in the tiller extension right off, they sit low on the jack plates and cant be trimed all the way up.It turned out to be the cowling pan mounted trim switch.I disconnected both of them never use them anyway.

update..........i finally went out to the boat after a week or so and turned on thebattery switch to see if it still tilted on it's own and every thing is working fine and this was the first time i messed with it since the morning fiasco happened, so i'm leaning toward the trim switch on the steering wheel had gotten wet and shorted so i'm gona order a trim switch and re-install a trim line i had taken loose to try and get it down that morning, the fairing has gone back to its original shape but of course is splintered and cracked but is looking very repairable at this point, i'm hoping to get some time to work on it this weekend :D

when you replace the trim on back side of thr buttons where the wires come out put some silicone there that will prevent water from getting in there again!!!!!!!!! i learned the hard way give that a try it should prevent that from happening again to you.

THAT SUCKS. I FEEL FOR YOU. MY XR2001 ALLISON DID THE SAME THING WHILE WE WERE AT THE RACES AND IT STARTED TO RAIN AND WE HEARD SOME CRACKING AND REALIZED THAT THE TRIM STUCK. IT WAS THE SWITCH THAT WAS MOUNTED ON THE PAN OF THE ENGINE COWL. IT WAS NOT A WATERPROOF MERC TRIM BUTTON AND IT GOT WET AND STARTED TO TRIM AND BUSTED MY RAM AIR FAIRING. THANK GOD MY FRIEND DOES FG WORK. I FEEL FOR YOU. THANKS ERIC.

I have a single trim ram on my 150 MERC and noticed that with the jackplate all the way down my hydraulic steering ram would hit the top of the jackplate when tilted about 3/4 of the way up.
What I did to make it idiot proof ( I let my brother and others drive it too ) was to put a brass sleeve inside the trim ram to limit the travel to about 3/4 ( well.....just a bit less ) so that the steering ram COULD NOT hit anything. I'm sure this could be applied to prevent damage to cowls etc.
My motor still goes up enough to clear everything that I need it to clear (about 8" higher than the pad) and if I had a runaway trim pump I wouldn't kill the steering ram AND the trim pump. :)
Besides, those motors seem to tilt up excessively high anyways
Just MY solution...........................
