Hi I am restoring a Mercury 1977 1500 XS and would like to find a good fast hull for that short shaft engine. I do 50/50 fresh water and ocean so a performance v hull might be best. But I am open for IDEAS!
Thanks - James - 86vintage

16 Action Marine would be great for that motor. The hull creates lift and would most likely be the fastest boat you could run that motor on.Had a freind years back that had that setup and he got 80 mph out of it :)

hydrostream viper. easy to find and fast. you should be able to get 70mph no prob with that motor

I agree with Helmut on the Viper being a good choice. A 15 or 16 Ally would also be excellent. The problem is, any boat that's a good match for the 1500XS is gonna be absolutely lousy in the ocean. If you want to spend 50% of your time there I'd find another engine/boat combination.

The 15/16 Allison is great on lakes and rivers but suffers in open waters. The 16 Action does have a lot of lift and is a much better ride in chop. An even better choice would be the 17 Action if you can find one. They will take chop better than the 16 and not as flighty. The Actions have more interior room so you can carry 4 safely. Both came in 15" transom heights. much depends on where you are looking. The Actions were made in Fla. and you should have no problems finding one there.
None of them would be very good in the ocean unless you are talking about a very calm day off of Miami. But the 17 Action was very good in the Bay.
I don't have a lot of experience in Streams so I can't judge but do have hundreds of hours in the Actions and Allisons.

That motor also works well on A Kennedy Craft, if you can find one. I had an XS on one years ago and it ran very well for its time.

These were good boats for the inline motors.

I have a new V-King that runs 83+ now with a 2.4 150 merc.
I would sell if the price was right!
It's a center steer boat.
With lots of extras!
Let me know before she goes to sleep for the winter!

A nice straight and light viper will go 80, but sure as hell no good in the ocean.....

Any hull that works well with that motor is going to be a problem in the ocean!!!

But if that is the motor you are going to use --- I would try to find a Hydrostream Viper or Vector --- with a good set up and prop you will see 80 MPH with either one.

Or plan B --- find an Allison XR2002 or SS2000. These hulls have a good botton and are light enough so you will run 80+ with a good set up.
