I was looking in getting a new boat and came across a 21' cougar with no motor. So I picked it up and was going to put my 99 200 on it from my AE21 and was woundering whats the best set up for engine set back and so on on this boat? Also how fast do you think it will run with my 200 with a 25 tempest?

You'll need a good 12'' of setback and with a strong running 200,you should see 82 or better.

Sorry to say, but I doubt it will be much faster than the AE21. Perhaps more cool. The same sort of set up should work. Lots of setback and a bow lifting prop. A Tempest will lift the bow, but you might want an overhub prop.

I Seriously Doubt You Will See 80 With That Motor. I Have A Very Similar Hull And I Bet You Will Be Mid To Low 70's With A Light Load.

I just dug through my old Hot Boats and looked for Cougar 21 tests

Hot Boat used to test with two on board.

Feb 92, 2.5, 240 HP, 26 chopper, 79 mph
Jan 98, 225 Pro Max, 26 chopper, 81 mph

May 98, John Tiger comparison test in Hot Boat

225 pro max, 30 ET, 89.8 solo, 83 with 2 on board
2.5, 28 ET, 100.4 solo, 93.5 with 2 on board
300 pro max, 32 ET, 105.3 solo, 96.5 with 2 on board

225 0-30 4.8 40-70 17.4
2.5 0-30 5.4 40-70 12.3
300 0-30 5.5 40-70 11.2

If it is kissing 90 with a 225, it seems to me that 80+ would be doable with 200.

Per the article, all motors worked best with ETs but it did not say what other props were tested. The 40-70 times mean more to me that the top speed times, just based on how I boat.

Twins. 119 w/300's. Search for the post, it's worth it.

The reason I stated mid 70 ish was because he asked about speeds with a 25 hangin off the end of the motor...sure the speeds can get bigger with a different prop and light loads...Look at the props used to get those speeds in your mag.

I didn't think that the best thru hub props were more than a couple of MPH slower than an over hub prop. That was true on my Virage, but definately not on my Allison, so who knows.

When do we find out? Are you getting the Cougar wet before winter?

i have a 22' version of "almost the same hull design" and with a 300x and a 28 bravo 1:cool: , I am seeing 91 mph with vapors for fuel and 1 underfed driver...of course I do have 3 batteries on board and a trolling motor strapped to the bow.

Ya I went out saturday afternoon and ran 83.6 best run on GPS with the 25 tempest with an average of 82 and then at the end of the day blew my head gasket. So its back in the garage. I want to rebuid my motor who do you think is good?

you had to be turing 7300 rpm to see that speed. Are you sure?
What is the motor?

I was turing 7100RPM on a stock 99 200 carb with 16" of setback and a CLE gearcase. with 3 people in the boat and full load of gas I was running 74.6 and the altitude was 136.

what RPM were you hitting at 83 mph if you were at 7100 at 74?

lowlifeAE21

7100 at 83!

No prob! What prop do you think i should run? I have a 24 chopper but I have not tried it yet.

I didn't know that a stock 99 200 would turn 7000 rpm. Did you remove the rev limiter or the oil injection?

Ted at Speedmaster is as good as any for rebuilding motors. Anthony SS always recommends Dryland. Both are just north of Toronto.

If you just replace the head gasket and keep the motor stock; I would try a 26" pitch prop to reduce the RPM's and get you close to peek power. That should increase your top end speed.

Do you have the phone numbers for those different places.

Thats some good mph for a full load. Is the Cougar a true tunnel or does it have a center sponson ? My best prop untill this year was a 26p ET , now I run a 27p SRX and just got a 28p Chopper II but havent tried it yet. Our boats are quite similar I believe. I have done some work to my 2.4 200 and have seen 86 MPH this year on GPS. Runs 79 with 2 and full fuel. My hull hates big ear choppers. I run 16" of set back too. Hydraulic jack is a must too. Lets see a pic.

good hull, runs mid 80,s as you have found... get the RPM down to around 6500 empty so get a 26 or 27P..... then your stock engine will live alot longer..

My buddy had a 21 Cougar MTR with a Merc 2.5 260 HP with shaved heads on it. Ran 94 @ 7700 rpm with a Merc 26 small ear chopper prop with two on board. It really seemed to like the small ear chopper. An ideal prop might be a 28 pitch small ear to take advantage of the good low end torque and limited rpm capability of a 200.

Hey Bill, thanks for the update, I really liked that Skater, glad to see it went to a good home.

Yes, the 21 Cougar was red and white. It belonged to my buddy Brad Sheppard. Cougars are nice boats. Everywhere you look is top notch. That thing was like a mirror. No waves at all in the gelcoat. Is that the one you have now?

I'm a new member today, (12/5) I have a 89' 21 MTR. It looks brand new, it only has maybe 30 days out on it. I have had it stored in a heated garage in michigan for the past ten years. I had it delivered to San Diego in Oct., where I live. I am putting a all white interior in it and I thinking of a new 300, oh also all the new anodized goodies as well. It has been a couple of years but I have a offshore jack plate and a Bob's Machine hyd. plate on it. I also ran a 28 chopper. One person, 5 gal. in the left tank, 5 mile an hour head wind, 1 foot chop and this machine fly's!!!
