The following info is stamped on the prop:

388884 (Is this an OMC #? The fellow has a 140 on a Larson Wildfire)
13 3/4 X 23
A "3" is cast on each blade. The prop is black. Edit: It is an over the hub prop.

This prop is located in my area and has not been used. Would this be a good prop for my Viper/140, or not enough pitch?

Thanks, Jeff

It's an OMC part number, I think an SRX. I've got to scratch around and see if I can find something a little more definite.

Not really. I'm jerking your chain.

Pete, I think I can get that prop for a song. Do you think that is too little pitch for a Viper/140?

Boz, I miss you man.

Thanks Randy. I may buy it anyway if I can get it cheap enough.

Is the Vixen similar to the Viper for set-up?

When I ran a 150 inline on the Ventura MANY years ago, I turned a small ear chopper (14 X 26) about 6000 rpm. It was pretty much the perfect prop for it. My guess would be the 23 wouldn't be enough pitch, but all my experience is with Mercs, so I'm by no means any kind of authority.

That prop is an SSTRX. I couldn't get my V-King on plane with one on my 120 when I had it. Ran okay once I got it planed out, but didn't had enough pitch for me. They don't have a lot of rake. Buy it and try it. I had no problem selling mine when I didn't like it. I could have sold several more from the response I got. Maybe make a couple of bucks?

Many years ago I ran one of these on my Hydrostream Vector with a stock 140 Evinrude 1982 model. This prop did not have enough pitch for me --- the motor turned 6600 RPM at 68 to 69 MPH.

This is an old OMC prop that has not been available for over 20 years. They were designed for the V4 motors of the day ; 135 and 140 HP. They had a nominal pitch of 23" , but when I had it checked by a good prop shop they said it was closer to a 22" pitch. This would account for the cavitation and lack of bite that a true 23' inch prop with good rake would have.

Anyway, these props were designed in the late 1970's and were originally coated with with a silver colored epoxy --- this is why you may have heard them called "Silver Streak" props. Later, before they were discontinued they were coated with black tefflon.

Hope this helps.

Thanks Jimbo, yeah it helps a lot. If a 140 can turn 6600 RPM on a Vector with that prop, then it will most likely not work well on a lightweight Viper. Not enough pitch/top end, yet no holeshot.....what did this prop work on?

They worked, sometimes, on boats where the horsepower to weight ratio allowed the motor to run in the peak horsepower band.

For example, a reatively light bass boat ( 17' to 18' ) with a 115 HP motor; or a 16' Checkmate with a 115 HP ; or a 17' non pad vee bottom with a 140 HP motor.

Sometimes a rework such as more cup would give it more bite and less cavitation and better bow lift.

Anyway, like all prop work, you have to try it, you never know what may work on your boat.

Like I said, it didn't have enough pitch for a 120 on a V-King. 6000 plus rpm.

Riverman,
I use a Mazco 26 pitch with my V-4 to keep the Rev's down to 5500ish. I have two of those 23 SRX's and they don't work as good as the mazco.

i also use a mazco 14x24" on my 140, it is waaaaaay better than my 23srx in acceleration and llittle bit on the top end. i turn mine at about 6100 rpm

Is a Mazco similar to a small ear Merc chopper?

Yep, the ears on my mazco are 5" wide
