Hi all,

Just a quick question: I will be putting my 82' 150 crossflow v6 on a viper. WHat is the ideal setback (6"') and engine height>? should it do over 75 mph (compression and leakdown are perfect). Thanks alot! Motor is on a 16' checkmate and i really want some more speed.

From what I've read, Vipers need very little setback, if any. There is already setback built into the transom. If you want the adjustability without much setback, use a Bob's convertible 4 in 1 jackplate. It can be changed to either 2 1/2 to 5 inch setback.

I have a 1990 150XP Evinrude on my Viper right now, It has 5.5" of set back, a CMC hydraulic jack. I'm not saying that this is the best set up but it is all I have.....my best so far is 77mph on GPS using a 29 pitch OMC SRX by DAH. The lower has a land and sea nose cone and prop shaft is 1-2 inches below the pad.
Hope this helps

As little as possible. I had a 235 johnson bolted to the transom as high as can go. those motors are way to heavy on a viper. it went 84.3 on GPS. Bolted a 2.4 200 on a jackplate and with 6 inch set back and went 87.2. and the bow hardly lifted to plane off. the best bet would be a bobs jack plate inverted which gives you about 2 inches set back and run the prop shaft about 1/2 inch below the pad. Good luck

ps try a 26 chopper should work good and a cleaver is what I prefer.
