Anybody use one? Only place I see to mount one on my 1990 2.4 is where my water press connects. I saw a pic of Skips motor and it has the press gauge in the rear water jacket cover. Can I drill & tap a 1/8" pipe and move mine there. Is the plate thick enough. Also, if I put a temp gauge at the top what temp is expected? I blew 3 motors last year on my fishin' boat! One the Weisco pin came out. One the screws fell out of the top plate on the center carb and leaned out 3 & 4. The other was a decked block and I didn't know. Running 7000 and heard a noise. Can you say smashed piston tops? Had circles pounded into all the pistons frrom smacking the heads. What a mess. If I had been told I could've run a thick head gasket or two. LOL
Thanks
Dave

The url below will take you to a flow diagram for an 89 or newer motor. Some are a little different. Notice that the water comes up through the center of the engine down through the exhaust divider cover and into the block. When the block is full it can flow into the top of the heads and out the bottom of the heads through some passages into the poppet valve area. This is the hottest water in the motor because it has been all the way through it. When the heads are full water can come out of the top of the heads and out the hose.

It is your choice where you put the sender. I would put it in the hottest water. The other choice is a head temp sensor on the outside.

Mine is installed in a 1/8" pipe thread hole drilled and tapped straight down in the top of the head just behind the thermostat housing.

I already have a temp gauge in the starboard head. Gauge doesn't move much:confused: My press gauge is int he top of the block. The larger hole would be an easy spot to put it, but I understand this is the FIRST place the water goes and will always be cooler. I already have a SURTEMP gauge:D I noticed Talon 2.5's motor and saw the PRESS gauge in the back of the port side of the rear water jacket cover. I have 1/8" restricters for stats. Poppet valve has 2 coils cut off the spring. Runs 4-5 psi @ idle, 23 at WOT. Nosecone about 1" below bottom. 6" setback. What would the temperature be of the hottest water, probably at the top of the head. Do you agree? Just thinking.
Thanks,
Dave

I think the hottest water would be at the bottom of the heads, since the flow through the heads is from top to bottom. Your temperature guage may not be reading right. Try this:
1. Get a candy thermometer.
2. Boil some water and see if it reads 212
3. Take your temp sensor out of the head and put it in about 130 degree water with the candy thermometer.
4. If it reads the same as the thermometer, it is ok.
5. If it reads different, tell me and I will tell you what to do next.

ok i'm home now (notice what time it is?) man these are some long days, anyway the quicksilver temp guage and sender kit part number is...........79-816932-A1

but if ya have the guage part number 79-816932 and get the temp sender number 12415 (all quicksilver by the way) then you got it made in the shade, the senders are made by stewart warner and can be installed in the top of the head, my 2.4's had this setup and it worked great i still have my kit here to install on my 2.5 (someday)

attatched is a photo of where to drill and tap the threads for the sender in the top of the head, this worked great for me in the past and it measures water temp not metal temp :D

the guage face has numbered degrees instead of just C---------H

it goes from60 to 200 with the red line starting at 180+

Thanks for the diagrams. I have used them a lot. One picture is worth a lot of words. Does the temperature kit you mentioned have the screw in sender, or do I need to buy the seperate pieces? What diameter is the guage? Is it black faced? And, last do you have the part number for a matching water pressure guage?

Did you see my post on the hydraulic steering thread? I can get that "tiller" bolt for you anytime. It's $3.00 + shipping.
