Some of the rest of the story, Clyde also spent his first summer with his new boat boating at just about every and any boating event he could find, from WI to FL and lots of stops in between. I think I heard 35000 plus miles on the old Tahoe with the Venom in tow. Last I heard he wore out the oil bath bearings on the trailer in less than 2 years!
He did a great job on the paint work, creating a true one of a kind Venom and has continued to work with us on ideas and updates. Like many Hydro Stream owners, and all Venom owners he is a loyal outboard freak, always looking for more speed and a good time.
As many of you who have met him know he is a great Ambassador for our products and our sport and besides he can talk all night about cheese!
Here is a picture from one of his first wins!
I'm wondering, with today's gas prices and heavier motors, if anyone's tried a lower horsepower motor on the Venom. In other words, what is the least amount of power that will reliably hit let's say 80 mph? 90 mph? 75 mph? Be interesting to know.............................

JW, I drove a Venom last summer with a ProMax 225X that I got up to 96.4 on GPS, we have one in AR that K&J Marine put together for Andy with a used 200 that runs low 90's with only the limiter removed. We also tested and did a photo shoot for Mercury last year with a 2.5XS, I got it up to 91 with less than 3 days setup time, I'm sure there was more there with more time. The 2.5XS was an Opti, 2 year warranty and above average fuel numbers. I am working with Mercury on some 2005 leftovers of that engine that we might put some nice price packages together on. I am sure the boat will run well with even less hp now that we have some setup figures.
We have a couple Venom's running regularly in the 110-114 area. I ran my demo last weekend with 3 onboard at 101.7 and climbing, just ran into traffic and had to slow down.
One of the other K&J Venoms is running brackets at 11's dialed in, I think he ran a 11.007 on race day, but he also ran some very low 10's during practice and had some 5.9 1/8 mile splits at 91/92 mph running a stock 280, stock Sportmaster on the bottle. See the attached picture of the boat running around 110. Like Clyde's these boats, including mine are side steer pleasure/lake runners.

any more on the kevlar venom?

We built 3, 2 have a kevlar layer in our light laminate schedule. One of those is owned by Ricky Smith and is running a new drag set up by Mac Cruz, Jaco Marine, if things go right it might show up at Jasper! The other one is all yellow and is in stock at Jaco Marine. The third one I am using, it has both a kevlar hull and deck. It currently has a mild Bill Gohr 280 with a Offshore Box and stock Sportmaster. Boat is running 110/112 @ 8000 with a stock 30 ET. I think thats all I can get with the stock lower unit. Planning to have the lower unit done over the winter and start playing with props. I think the boat can make high teens maybe 120. Here are a couple pictures of it.
very nice!
how much weight did you save?
RT

About 140 pounds, but we did a lot of parts and pieces in kevlar, including the stringers, the fairing is carbon fiber w/kevlar woven. Luckily one of our suppliers gave me all the materials. I don't think it would be practical or worth what it would cost to dublicate the lamination schedule. 1oz Mat w/Kevlar skin with VE resin, then bulked with a Kevlar/Mat stiched material cored with Baltec Airlite with a VE/ISO blend bulk all vac bagged. So far it is not that much faster at the top end from a standard light lamination and you have to be real careful with stepping or kneeling on it. If it was really going to the race track you would have to really weight up to make class. As a river runner, the weight advantage does give it awesome accelleration. I have surprised a couple big black v-drives, specially when I run a 24 drag.

What core material is the transom and attatching braces... Is that the airlite core you spoke of... Is there a link to see more of the construction of the boat... I didn't find much on the Hydrostream site... Thumbs up on taking the construction to a new and much needed level...
Stream 1

The transom, knees, and pad are cored with a composite material made by Penske, which is a very high density product, other parts of the hull are cored with two differient density Airlite products, and we core other areas with a third core material that will also hold screws but is a little heavier.
Like all performance companies, our lamination and core process is proprietary, we have spent alot of time testing, experiementing, and working with composite, fiberglass, and resin vendors and don't wish to educate our competition. We are the only outboard performance boat builder using full composite construction and vacuum bagging as part of every boat we build, not just our comp lamination process. I believe we are building one of the highest quality products in our market segiment. Other manufacturers using these processes are offshore companies like Skater
Attached are a couple pictures of a simple production Voyager hull, showing the differient core materials and then under Vacuum. This is a very basic boat for us, obviously something like Comp Venom's are more complex and I'm not willing to discuss or post pictures in a public forum. But think about these pictures showing how we core and build our simplest, heavyest, slowest product. Then ask the competition how they build their product.

As usual your photograghy is the best.
Also, thanks to everyone for the congratulations, you guys rock.
The photo's were from last years BTTW. Since then the boat has had a GPI powerhead w/mild porting, Bucato box, lightweight flywheel, GPI/Titus LU.
Randy has worked on the set-up, without which I wouldn't have been winning races against guys that were spanking me last year. Thanks Randy!
Jim,
"I think I heard 35000 plus miles on the old Tahoe with the Venom in tow. Last I heard he wore out the oil bath bearings on the trailer in less than 2 years!"
Actually the trailer has about 12,000 miles on it (8,000 last year and maybe 4,000 this year). The bearings didn't fail, the seals did (both sides). Only on the axle with brakes causing a bearing failure on the right rear before I caught it. I think they got too hot from the half dozen or so trips through the mountains?
I'd be lying if I didn't admit I was a little nervous about buying a boat with a new, unproven design at the time (Mine was the first one to have a 280 on it), but I couldn't be happier with how it turned out. Both performance wise and looks I love it. Jim and Dennis Leal did a fantastic job bringing out something completly new.

Maybe what you said is you drove 12,0000 miles but it felt like 36K. Anyway thanks for all you do to promote the Venom!

Clydes boat is gorgeous. and even though Gregs pictures are great you can't see all the subtleties of the boat. every detail was accounted for. It is a flawless boat. And the owner is a super nice guy as well.
congratulations on the article Clyde, can't think of a more deserving boat or person.

Your just damn lucky I wasn't on my mark at Crosby this year or that checkered flag would'a been flying out of a 14 year old Hydrostream.   LOL Oh well, second place to that Venom ain't bad. ;) ;) ;) Jim, Randy, and Clyde have done a great job with this boat. You have to see it in person to appreciate it.

Congrat's Clyde:
Well deserved that the Venom's the new feature boat. I saw the boat earlier this year @ the GPI mothership and as previously stated the boat looks more awesome in person.... especially the ghost flames.
Nice to have met you Clyde.. Sue say's hello!!! We'll be in Wisconsin @ Lake Shawano maybe in a couple of weeks. I think I'm gonna bring the Rocket. If that falls through we'll be up next August for a week.

Probably another 1-2 mo in the brace. No Jasper this year for me - too much time off for the injury. :( Randy already winterized & wrapped the Venus weeks-ago, just in-case I had any bright ideas about getting in one last Fall-blast this year... Rehab this Fall & Winter, and God willing - I'll be back in the Spring, doing all the stuff that we all live for. :) PS: I heard Randy already briefed you on the "New Frontier of Speed" AKA - Karting!! ;)

Let me know when and if your going to be on Shawano. I've been thinking about putting the boat away to make room for snowmobiles.
