question on stator

Recently on a really rough lake I noticed my tach took a dump. When I got back to the house I started to inspect wiring and found that the rect/regulators weren't putting out. I just happened to look up at the stator and noticed that 2 of the coils were totally fried. I mean charcoal. I thought maybe because it was so rough out (5-6 footers) my battery had gotten a shorted cell from the bouncin it took. But she charged up fine. I did put on a new stator and found that the reg/rec were also toasted. So now I need to change them out. Anybody got an idea what would cause these guys to go like that out of the blue. I hate to put in new stuff and it happen again. Oh yeah a 2000 MY 225 Pmax

You have a short in your wiring. Disconnect the battery terminals from the battery and connect an ohmmeter to the terminals. It should not be zero, infinity is best.
