Hey guys I am looking for some info on the last couple of years of fich motors OMC made. Just before leaving for this (my third trip) over here to the place where the money is tax free and sand is plentiful my wife told me whatever money we save while I am gone I can use on the boat. I have already been considering upgrading my 1994 225 Vindicator that runs really good and has nothing wronge with it for a 250. But now that fuel is so expensive I really think I would like to have something alot better on fuel. I just dont make enough to buy an e-tec new, and I dont think there will be used ones on the market. So my question is this will I be happy with gas saveing and dependability also power with some of the later years of the fich. I am brand loyal so it will have to be rude or jonny. NOthing bad about mercury or yamaha just not for me.
The motor will be on a 201 ski, and as with everything else I do realize all that goes alonge with buying used motors. I guess I am just wondering in general what everyone thinks.

I would stay away from anything prior to BRP taking over.

Also, a motor payment buys a lot of extra gas.

Lockjaw and the Duke are right! B&WB just tested an etec 225H.O. on a Stratos 201 and it hit 76+ mph. I'm sure the bottoms of the newer boats are different but it gives you an idea what you can expect. The 225H.O. is the same motor as the 250 with just a different gearcase and graphics.

Is your boat the closed bow ski boat? If so I would go with the H.O. over the 250. It will be a couple mph faster than the 250.

I would not buy a ficht motor, not even the new ones. The etec is just that much better.

Except for the Crossflows, they were fantastic.;)

I would love an e-tec, I just dont think the government pays me enough for one. My 201 ski is an open bow, its the only thing my wife said we have to have, I can have any boat as long as it is an open bow.

I got a crossflow, what are you trying to say?

I like the idea of an HPDI yammie, since they make hop up parts for them. I just hate the idea of NOT being able to do anything.

Oops, I've got one too. They ARE fantastic.

I want to start doing some research on the cross-flow what years where they made? and is there spacified model or all models during certian years?

If you have a 94 Looper then you do not want to back step to a x-flow. The v-6's were pre 1991 & they will use as much if not more fuel that your current motor.

I would look for a 99 & up 225HO Ficht if you want to stay inexpensive. A new 225ho e-tec will run you $17k+ rigging, guages etc.

If you can find a ficht with all the updates then you should be fine. Most all problems with these motors have been resolved & they are very dependable & get fuel economy. I have owned & still own a few fichts. Kinda hard to beat...

Don't be too sure about the crossflow vs the looper.

true hp vs fuel economy the looper would win easily

Regulations changed where instead of crank hp it was measured at the prop shaft. Most of the small bore x-flow 200's actually only had 185-190hp at the propshaft. Plus hes got a 3.0lt motor now on a semi heavy hull. If he goes to a stock x-flow 200 he'll loose a good many MPH. The cost of the mods & gas needed to keep up with the current looper would not be feasable.

Well its an option for you & thats the good side of it. Another thing to do is look for just a powerhead. If you can find someone who has a complete powerhead you can then just drop it onto your exsiting mid & gearcase.

I resent the remark about a semi heavy boat, it a really heavy boat! I would have loved a triad open bow but the cost to much even used. Plus I boat this for $7000 with only about 150 hours on it. I have looked at pulling it apart and removing the open cell foam but I really dont think mine is water logged. Just to many heavy seats that I am not willing to pay a ton to have modified to only loose 150 lbs.

Back to the motor question will all the drive parts match up on a 99 or newer power head to my 94 mid and lower. Are there any modifications or upgrades I should do (if I can find one) while it is all apart? Like reeds, solid motor mounts? anything?

I am searching the net now and once i get back home I am going to try to find a powerhead at a local shop.

thanks for the help so far

The powerhead will bolt on with no problem.

Your really not suppose to do any modifications to the motor per EPA.

If it were me I would just "clean up" any rough casting on the front half & ride!!

I am guessing since the 225HO and 250 are similar that eather would bolt right on, I am suprised to hear you say just polish the castings, no reeds? no motor mounts?

Last question Know a good way for me to find one?

I've never put a set in an FFI motor so I didnt want to suggest something I've never done.

I'm not real sure it would make much if any differance as the fuel is injected right on top of the piston & the air to fuel ratio is controled by the EMM. Most of the V-6s are limited at 6400 I beleive.

Also solid motor mounts are always a good Idea.

How sensative are the Ficht to air flow increases like louvers or a above water relieved exhuast?
Now all i gotta do is find one

Michael Martin

You'll be fine with both. Dont remove the air box on the front of the motor as there is an o2 sensor there.

found a 2000 or 2001 factory powerhead for just under $3000. sound like a good deal? will it fit? I am trying to find out if its an HO i am afraid its a normal 225 but at least its a ficht

Michael Martin

NOt that it is hard to confuse me, but I asked the seller who is also selling his 225HO outboard motor what the powerhead was from. He stated it was a 225, 3.3ltr. I was under the understanding that 225 was a 3.0ltr and 250 was 3.3ltr. I thought he HO were a tuned 3.0. Am I all wrong here? Also the motor has less than 30 hours and he is selling on ebay. Might be able to get it for $2000.

2000 EVINRUDE DIRECT INJECTION 225 HP

It says on the ad that is has electrical problems. That can get very expensive

You would be better off finding a blown motor that is complete. Normally you can get these for around $2000. You'll spend another 2500 rebuilding it. This was you know what your getting. Also make sure your getting a fresh water motor. If its been in salt, it could be a pain to get apart.

Thats a 3.0 225 not an HO.
