two strokes still live, 50hp twostroke yamaha, will make a come back next season, 4 strokes are power less pigs on the water, the only 4 stroke that ever did any thing on the water is a SC900, Every other one is a joke.

Yep, that 2 strokes are much better in the small engine range. Teh 15hpmerc is a fantastic engine, but if you can't buy it locally try ebay etc. Other than that I think BRP will have a DFI 15 hp soon - and that would be my choice if I can't get a lightweight engine from Merc. Just wait, with the cost of fuel sky rocketing I'll bet merc will be hurt baldy by it's dependce on Big gas sucking eniges.

Listen to this: Stihl's newest weed eaters are now 4 strokes, BUT even though they've got valves and camshafts, etc, they still require premix at 50:1 and have no oil in the crankcase. I guess Al Gore's jibber jabber that lawn mowers and recreational equipment accounted for 30% of the total polution sank in with some of the enviro-nazis. As Halffast pointed out, how much cleaner can it be if it's still burnin' the oil? I hope that sometime in my lifetime we have somebody in government with some common sense.

the stuff that kills all the fish and birds ect. is in the gas  far more that the oil, the gas can do without that stuff. the enviro-nazis thay can have my two

You should contact Ocean Outboard/Marine - I think they might still have some smaller Mercs in stock. This pic was taken there at the beginning of the month, so maybe that short shaft 2-stroke 9.9 (middle) is still available if they don't have a 15.:)

Fred, nothing beats the nearly 30-gallon-per-hour fun of an EFI V6 Mercury. It's a 'muscle-outboard' that will go down in history along with others.

Scott, what ever happened with your Merc 15?

Scott, what ever happened with your Merc 15?

Bought a new swivel bracket and the rest of the parts I needed from Mercury (about $250 worth  ) Put it back together and used the crap out of it on our vacation we had last week and the week before. Still not really sure why it broke but now have an intersting conversation piece

So far my towing record is pulling 3 each 8-10 year old boys on one large tube all going about 20 or so.

I also can plane the 9' inflatable with the whole family in it, Myself, Wife, 14 year old girl, 10 year old boy, 6 year old girl, and one small dog ;)

I really is to bad they quit making that motor, plan to keep mine tell they pry from my hands

I'm glad to hear you got it back together again. They really are fun little motors. I won't get rid of my 9.9 or 25. :)

they weigh 111 lbs compared to 75 lbs for the 2 stroke imagine trying to put one of those on while straddling a floating raft!

Scott what happened to your 15? what year was it?

Bill check out this thread:

Mine is a 1999, that was new in the crate and I got it this winter from a board member, so it was basically a new never used motor, mabe had 15 or so hours on it when the bracket let go

did you come up with a cause of failure? I know they are fun to run hard I dont want that happening how fast did you get it running?

blkmtrfan
08-31-2005, 08:13 AM
As far as I know I didn't get a warranty  :(, but I knew that going in.

Still not sure what caused the failure, other than the casting let go.

I was running WFO in about 1' ers, maybe 25 mph or so jumping around quite a bit, but the prop never left the water (basically racing another inflatable and going thru our own wakes)

From the other thread no one else has ever seen such a failure, so for now I will put it down as a fluke

I have a '99 15 Johnny, what a beautiful mota. Runs like a top, never have to pull the cord out more than a few inches.

The little Mercs were made by Tohatsu, I think. Maybe they still make them under their name.

I love my old '69 Merc 110. The thing still starts right up and runs like a top.

My '98 Merc 15 is a good little motor, but I hate to death having everything on the tiller handle. Tilt mechanism, throttle and shifter, IT'S TOO MUCH!

I have no idea why they don't use a seperate shifter like they used to for years. It's a way better system. Having the the shifter built into the tiller just make it harder to start and adjust the idle when in neutral.

Other than that, it's a great little motah. :)

You can make it the other way pretty easily, go to merc parts express and order one of these:

If I remeber correctly, doesnt these engs have a sticker product of Japan on the serial # tag? Maybe it was the little ones only.

I am pretty sure it is only the 5 and smaller that were made in Japan, but I will look at the tag on my 15

You know when you think about just about all the small 2 strokes from any manufacturer are great little engs. Hard to beat a simple carb 2 stroke. I hope these will always stay. They sure dont burn enough to add to the pollution problems. I dont think a 4stroke could ever match one for hp to weight. If it did it would cost so much nobody would buy it.

got an 8 hp. as a kicker.. got ran on
STRAIGHT GAS atleast a few times in its lifetime... (OOPS) still running AS A MATTER OF FACT the compression STOCK was 115 lbs the first time it was ran on no oil it didnt even hurt it,, the second time the remote AUTOBLEND oiler clogged up it droped to 60 lbs so I was thinking it was toast, but it was still running kinda so I took a 16:1 mix of fuel and ran it WOT in reverse for about an hour (6000 + rpm) and compression was back up to 90 and 95 , that was 5 years ago, most dependible engine we have ever had.. after SEVERAL thousand HRS ( EST 7500 hrs) the side case was off once just toINSPECT the original damage from no oil. a couple of h20 pumps and gear case reseal in 17 years isnt that bad in my mind... its an 1988 model and still starts on second pull and PURRS all day long.. if she EVER DOES DIE i will replace the powerhead with a 15 powerhead and run her for another 20 years.

I am stock piling 2 strokes... got 9 of them right now.. a 1961 45hp merc 400... a 1964 MERC 60 a 1987 220 EFI in parts less injectors and ECM, a 1991 2.4L 200(hydrostream power) a 1990 8hp merc.. see a pattern here... a 1990 150 2.0L merc, a 1946 25hp MarK 25(i think been a while since i looked at thisone..) a 1981 Johnson 115 crossflow.. a 6hp SeaKing and FINALLY a 1974??? Ted Williams Atwater gamefisher 9.9 hp.... all run NONE of them could be pried away from me by an enviro NAZI... and DONT GET ME STARTED on Chainsaws......... exlogger, father was a forester, we have about 6 more engines if ya count saws..... needless to say UNLESS the 375 verado is lessthan 700 lbs.. and halfway reliable I aint NEVER owning a 4 joke... owned a honda once , traded a junk DANA 50 TTB front axle for it... ran it 2 times, ran out of fuel both times in less than an hour.. went back and traded back... never again will I own one of those jokes.... was a 5 hp.. felt more like 2 was LOUDER than the 45 merc at idle... and burned more fuel as well.... JOKE JOKE JOKE JOKE...
