Viper setup

I have a 1982 Viper with a 1987 Merc 90 3cyl. with CMC trim. Running a 13-1/2x17 prop and get 5500 rpm. The motor is fresh. Boats runs a pathetic 37.6 on GPS. Is the big ugly lower unit bullit the problem here? If so, will different smaller case lower unit fit? Any setup ideas? Thanx, LakeRaider

....that really isn't much of a performance motor. You'd be better off with a Johnrude 3 cyl. or better yet a V-4. With a V-4 and the right mods and setup, 70s or even 80s is possible. :cool:
