Tug, the strongest stuff I've ever used is the aircraft stripper in the blue and white can. Most paint supply houses around here have it. It's not supposed to be used on fiberglass, but I've used it (carefully and against friends's advice) for stipping Corvettes in the past.

Also, it seems to be important that you use it correctly. The instructions stress that you brush only in one direction (supposedly traps air) I've always scraped it off with a plastic bondo spreader to keep from gouging the fiberglass while it's wet. I'd try it on a real small area first and make sure it's compatible with whatever you're putting it on, and of course put it on thick enough that it stays wet til the stuff wrinkles.

What not to do: First Corvette I stripped in the 70's was going too slow, so I put the stuff on real heavy, then turned a pressure washer on it....................instant mo hair.

Tug,

I have used "Kleen-Strip" with good results. You can get in at The Home Depot. Warning: there are two different versions of this stuff. One is for everything except fiberglass. The other you can use on fiberglass. Just make sure that you get the right one if you are going to put it on 'glass. The regular stuff will eat resin/adhesives used in boats and stuff. Make damn sure you follow the directions. Take care.

I think thats one of the ones ive tried. also tried "strip eaze" "bix" along wit sum others, no luck! i'm starting to wonder what this boat was painted with, i hit it with a orbitol and 36grit paper would hardly break the finish. thanks, i'll be sure ive tried that one and if not might give it a try but i think what i'm looking for i will most likely find in a automotive paint supply house due to biodegratable issues Tug

Try using a razor blade, if the blade doesn't work by itself try it with the stripper. It usually works really good. If the paint is brittle it will remove a 1" swath in one pass. Sounds like your paint is too tough though.

Actualy, you right, ive allready removed all the paint on bottom with razor and 3/4 on top with razor, came right off!! but when they wetsanded the primer before painting they sanded threw to the gelcoat in some spots and you cant beat the **** off with a hammer!!! Whoever thinks paint wont stick to gel without epoxy primer is wrong!! the paint razored right off the primered spots thow!! The paint is extremely touph, Think it might be a epoxypaint like awl-grip or somthing:)

IF its stick so well and indestructible why not leave it on and paint over it?

FEATHERING IN WORKS YES BUT I THINK ONCE YOU STRIP A CAR OR BOAT IT IS BEST TO STRIP THE WHOLE THING, BY SANDING OR FEATHERING IN ONCE YOU START TO PAINT YOU WILL USUALLY BE ABLE TO TELL WHERE THIS HAS BEEN DONE IF YOU LOOK CLOSE ENOUPH. tHE PAINT IS ALSO VER THICK, AND ITS FREAKING HARD, 36 GRIT ORBITOL WAS BARLY BREAKING IT SO WHAT WOULD I FEATHER IT IN WITH ON THE EDGES? WITHOUT GOUGING UP THE GELCOAT?? TUG

The aircraft stripper we use at work is" turco" brand it will eat thru any thing including your skin, get it on you and you got about 5 seconds to get to water fast or lookout feels like a torch burning your skin off. Wouldn't leave it on glass too long probably eat right thru. Cant tell you where to buy it i have an undisclosed vendor .

Sounds like it is some kind of aircraft paint (Imron, Durathane, AwlGrip, etc.). The strippers they make now are not as good as they used to be.....paint strippers, that is. I used a stripper made by Zep. They (safety Nazi's) made them change the formulation to make it safer (weaker). I don't think I would use stripper anyway. If you do, sand the areas with 36 grit on a "DA". This will break the surface and let the stripper penatrate easier. Don't let it sit too long!

I have heard of some places that blast with a plastic media. This was especially used on aircraft and Corvettes. Has anyone heard of this or seen it?

Mo hair....hahaha!
