I have a guy telling me he had a 1983 80 hp merc.I thought Merc only made the 80 in 71 as a inline 4 cyl.?? If there is such an animal, is it the same bolt pattern as the earlier inlines and sixes?

I can't recall the horsepower ratings of the 4 cyl engines in the early 80's and my brochure collection ends in 79, BUT if it's a 4 cyl the bolt pattern would be the same.

according to a serial number page 80hp were made in 60,61,69,70,71,72,78,79,80,81,82,83 in a 4cyl 87,88,89 in 3cyl.

The 60 & 61 engines would've been 6 cyl's and the 70 foward the 4's. I can't remember about the 69's off the top of my head. All of the 80's 72 and older would have a different bolt pattern from the 78 and newer and of course the 3 cyls of the late 80's are different bolt pattens also.

Thanks guys, That answered my question. I just have to wait and see if it was a 3 or 4 cylinder.

If it was an 83, it was definitely a 4 cylinder engine.

The new 3 cyl engine did not come out until 87. It came out in 70,80 and 90 hp versions, but after a few years they replaced the 70 and 80 with a 75.

Marcus, Those 3 cyls were around WAY BACK into the 70's as 650's. Even the 650XS race motor was upgraded to 700X in 76, 77 or so. In consumer engines the higher horse rated ones were basically the same as the early ones with upgrades.

I needed a set of trim cylinders and saw it on e-bay and in the pic it looked like a short shaft but it turned out to be a 20" shaft but it was a 4 cylinder.

Is there a page with the weights listed for all Merc outboards?
