I have a 79 Allison xst with a 200hp merc, 24p chopper I'm playing with engine height and its taken my water pickups above the water(3" below the pad). What are my options as far as low water pickups? I know Bob's can put a nose cone on for about $3--400.00. Anything else I can do.

Way back when before LWP were readily available I made aluminum plates 1" X 1/8" and just long enough to cover water pick up holes. I ground the edge at a 45 degree angle and screwed them on just behind the PU holes. They picked up enough spray to keep running cool. Sounds goofy but it worked.

Merc makes a plate kit that does just that. It's pretty cheap and easy to install. any local dealer should be able to find it in the acc. manual.

before, when it was a little lower I plugged the top three holes and got better presure but its to high now. I heard off the scoop type deal from Merc and I'll try to find it, for now it'll have to do. If anyone hears of a housing with low waters on it for sale at a good price please email me @ jkgracej@yahoo and a pic if posible. 1979 v200hp. Thanks guys

Yea the flat s/s plates that are bevled may help with the top 3 holes allened screwed up. But on a allison just as well bit the bullet and grt a bob's put on. Them plates also don't work too good if the grass is bad.

i've used the plates and they work to a certain point. having overheated motors with the on i only recommend actual low water pu. the $400 is cheap compared to the replacement motor.

The general consensus from those who have done the nosecone job themselves, is that you're better off to send it to Bob's to have it done. Everyone who tells their story seems to regret doing it themselves. Leave it to the experts. Better fit, finish, and function.

You will likely find the labor to be far more frustrating than $300...

I would have Bob's do it next time.

I have redone my bob's 3 times which was on it when I bought the housing used so I don't know who originally did it. But it takes time and is a pain in the ass. I'd pay the 300 extra and you have no head aches.
