The cowl on my 1987 150 Merc is cracked and in desperate need of a facelift. Is this possible. I dont really want to spend the $$ on a new cowl if I dont have to. I was wondering if I could maybe do some cutting and fiberglassing on mine. Has anyone out there done this. I would love to to see the result if this has been done. I eventually would like to go with an alternator set up and understand that an alien cowl is required for that set up. Could I alter mine for this?

lets not all answer at once lmao I am thinking of taking a regular cowl and maybe adding some vents to it or maybe even some scoops if i can find something small enough.check ebay man,you might find some smaller scoops or vents you can add or even mold in for that custom look.wish i was of more help,i been watching this thread to see what others had to offer myself

I currently have a 79 MERC v200 cowling thats cracked and faded. I am fiberglassing it enough to fill in the indents on the side and will also be adding vents. If it turns out good I'll post picks next week.

No pics yet but I think you will like this one. I am new to the fiberglass work so it took me all weekend to do just one side. It still has a few small pits in the fiberglass though. The other side will be easier now that I know what I'm up against. Hopefully I can post picks of one side tommorrow. Its gonna be a real butterfly blender!

Thats lookin awesome. Thats exactly what I had in mind. Where did ya find those side vents and have you worked with glass before?

never worked with glass before, ever! If you look close you'll see that they're no vents installed. I cut the shell on the top, bottom and front, prefferated the back, and just pulled the front open. I stuck a 1" peice of wood(toung depressor) in the slot to hold it open and carefully glassed it. You'll have to cut the spacers to glass in permently. I'm still working on the other one and will still have to repaint the one thats done. Still has small flaws in it.
