Well, az most ov ya'll no, I am restore'in a 70 Lyman 26' "offshore cruiser"...Tha engine is a 318 chrysler and a velvet drive clutch...The original engine wuz newly rebuilt, but the boat wuz put in storage with the plug still in it, so after a couple months ov rain, well, U figgered out tha rest!!!
Well, I tor tha motor down, to find the block wuz junk because 4 cyls had rust pits in them, bad enuff to need sleeves...I had a 79' truck motor, so I rebuilt it and got it in the boat, and sinched down...I went nex door to my brothers to git a starter(which the original wuz no good)...He had 2 that came off an old Chris Craft that he got the engines out of(440's)...He asked me which one I wanted, right hand, or left??...WELL, if U look at the motor from the front, it turns right hand, if U look at it from the back, it turns left, so I didn't know what the original engine wuz, so I juss figgered a single engine bote would be a right hand motor...WRONG!!...We looked at the prop, and it turned to the right!!...So, in order to do this, the engine would have to turn leff...BITCH!!...uppon closer investigat'in ov tha old motor, I find that tha camshaft iz backasswards, so the original engine wuz a LEFFHAND mota...
So, now I have a new right hand motor sett'in in a leffhand bote, hooked to a leffhand clutch, turn'in a right hand prop leff...I wundered why my Jabsco didn't line up exzakkly rite...OK, now...Kan any ov U Carmotor bote boyz tell me juss what iz involved wit make'in a lefty outta a normal mota...I know tha cam, which I have, and iz good...I also heard the crank iz differnt, but kan't see it...I sho need sum guidence yher befo I fill this mudderfunker full ov garbage an thro it a match!!
Hell, I'm so bummed about this bull****, I'm skeered ta work on my Wagon...I got it about 90% wired, and now I'm skeered to hook up tha battery????...Hell, tha way my lukk haz been goin, tha mota in tha wagon will run backasswardz
HELP!!!!!!!

Hi Rex,
Can't help much on Mopars. I thought almost all engines that are 'standard' turn clockwise(right hand) when looking in the forward direction as installed in the vehicle they're meant for, usually a road vehicle. Even airplane engines for propellors are that way(AT THE PROP SHAFT).
If you look at an outboard, they're standard clockwise when viewed from the top.(That doesn't mean they're supposed to go downward as a forward direction, but, for some it's not a bad idea!!)
If your engine has ever been installed and run, it seems a safe bet that the prop tells the direction it will run successfully. Or,simply stated, it turns the direction in which the disributor gives the correct firing order. Or, with a valve cover removed, the direction in which the exhaust valve's openings are followed immediately by the intake's opening.
As for any replacement starter, I'd hook it up, removed from the engine and see which way it spins with the right polarity. Find one that goes the correct direction.
As always, best of luck!! Cy

I am assumin you are usin the same distributor as was in it? Use the original distributor, LH starter, LH cam. Cranks are the same as they cannot relocate the cylinders to the rods accordingly. We tried some LH stuff on race motors as well and those were the only differences. Boat stuff is the same. As long as the firing order is reverse of what you have-you're in business.

Rex, Be careful! I believe the little groove at the oil seal part of the crankshaft are aimed the wrong way. turning a R. H. crank backwards will pump oil out of the engine. Compare the two cranks. :)P.S. a lot of L.H. chryslers were put in single engine boats.

Wouldn't it be easier just to change the prop?

But knowing you, you'll have the fastest backasswards crusier boat on the Tickfaw....

OK, I leerned a lot about this backassward/ritehand/leffhand crapp...OK, I have got a lot ov the crankshaft/oil seel leek'in stuff...the 318 car/truck/boat cranks are the same...the big blocks wit rope seels do have the oil channels in the cranks, and the R/H motors are backasswards from car motors, BUT, if the rope seals are replaced wit rubber lipped seels, oil leekage iz very slite/if any!!...The cam and cam geer and starter is the only thang needed to change the rotation ov the chrysler...If I juss changed the prop, I would have to pull the clutch and swap the pump 180*...I have the cam/geer/starter, so it will be faster for me to change the cam!!!...
I feel like an expert on this assbackwardz mota stuff!!!...I had an extra set ov intake gaskets I wuz wundering what I wuz gunna do wit, so now, I don't even have that to worry about!!...Thank everbody for your replys, REX

glad ya hear ya get er figured out rex. these engineers must get a kick out of knowing they are messing with people trying to fix this stuff(sik basterds).. im kinda going through the same thing figuring out this big ole 3.4 275hp offshore motor we just got for my 15ft glastron!!!! lmao, well its not for the glastron(although i was thinking bout the 16ft stream!!) but the shift bracket works in such a way that the cable pulls the shift rod the opposite way as a normal 2.0- 2.5 V-6 motor so forward puts it in reverse... i dont know if i have to get new controls or a lefty prop!!! and i thought this badass BAHA was finally ready to go and it wouldnt do over 10mph cause i guess the controls from the 2.5 that was on it wont let ya give it more then like an 1/8 throttle in reverse(which was really forward!!)!!! i had to give it a try even though it was going backwards in forward and going forward in reverse from where the controls were positioned... ok, over and out-- sean

SEAN - put a foot throttle in the thing and know that everything's azzbackwards and then sell it and don't tell the new owner....yeeehaw :D .
Oh yeah - I almost forgot to mention....
Have you checked visually to see how much throttle it's getting? I know you said it was having an ignition problem on 3 cylinders right? If the low end or part of the low end is gone on the stator it'll only do about 2000rpms - probably runnin on 3cylinders controlled by 1 pack. If it's getting full throttle put a timing light on it and see if it tells the tale....:o
How's the big bote comin REX?

lol, yeah i was thinking bout taking the hot foot out of the stream but seeing as how i just put the 2.5 that was 1st on the baha on the stream--cough-- yeah right.. i wanna see what my lil boat is like with a 2.5 cause if it goes over 70mph with a 2.0 it has got to fly with the 2.5!! oh, and that 3.4 is all set, it wasnt nothing but a switchbox!!

REX - why don't ya just cabbage the carmotta chit, glass the azz end in and I'll give ya my 2liter to throw on tha bak.
I'm sure you're probably too far along with your project now for this info to do any good, but I got to thinking about it and Bill Beaty (i think) up in Denham used to have some chrysler motta's out of a big boat in the back of his glass shop. That's been a few years ago, but I think they'd already been there a while...might still have them.
