I know, I know, WTF

But not looking for the typical question...

I would like to know, what high quality synthetic smokes the least? (visible that is)

or in other words, confuses the tree huggers the most :D

blkmtrfan, I have not noticed any difference in the amount of visible smoke between synthetic and mineral oil. In my opinion, the majority of the smoke you see is coming from the gas, not the oil. Remember, at 50:1 only 2% of what you burn is oil!

My motor ('98 merc 200 promax ss) only smokes during cold starts. I'm pretty sure it's due to incomplete combustion of both gas & oil stemming from the cold combustion chamber quenching the flame front before everything is burnt.

I don't think you'll find much difference in amount of visible smoke between the various synthetics. You should notice a difference in how they smell however.

Thanks for the reply msm.

I believe you are correct about the incomplete combustion during cold starts, but I swear that my buddy how ran redline in his old boat (no longer around for comparison) smoked less than mine with the merc oil
