Does anyone know if you can put CLE guts in a Sportmaster or Torquemaster case, and vice-versa.

my guess is they are. look up you serial number in merc part express. you can proint out the exploded views and part number. see if the part match. i was surprised on the commonality of thr std lu over the years from 1988 to 1999.

This only "issue" is the upper drive shaft bearings. The CLE typically only had one. The newer drive shafts had provision for two and used a spacer. The sportmaster has two upper drive shaft bearings. You can utilize a driveshaft with one upper bearing in both the CLE and Sportmaster, but if you have a driveshaft with 2 bearings you must remove the lower of the two and utilize a spacer to use it in the CLE.
I hope I didn't make this more confusing than it is.

what was involved in the conversion? Do you mean he cut down the cases? Made it non-shiftable?

No, I meant the guts in a CLE and Sportmaster are the same except for the driveshaft and extra top bearing, so it's an easy swap to change a CLE into a Sportmaster.
David, you're not confusing Sportmaster and Speedmaster are you?
