So out on the lake yesterday I started getting an alarm for the oil pump. I've been keeping the oil levels the same on both tanks, but the one with the alarm going off was about a gallon lower than the one that had no alarm but both were still better than half way full. How common is this problem? If the pump wasn't working why would it have burned through that much more oil in the same run time? I found what I would think is the oil pump. Is anything serviceable in there or is it a replacement only kind of situation?

So I talked to Lakeland Marine in Havasu and the guy I talked to said he's never heard of the pumps just going out. I'm wondering if it's a sensor or something simple.

When my 300x's were new last year my oil alarm kept going off. Smartcraft guage indicated low oil. I opened the oil reservoir cap on the engine a few times but it did not help. Finally I poured about a cup full of oil into this reservoir so it was right full to the top. The alarm never went off again. Try it.

I'll give it a shot, but it's not the low oil alarm, it's the one that shows an oil pump fault, which supposedly means that the oil pump isn't working. The odd thing is, that engine has been burning twice the oil and smokes on startup. Seems like the pump is working overtime...

OK, back out on the water today and it was fine for a few minutes then started alarming. It was still smoking so I know it's getting oil. However, on the way back in, the Smartcraft started cutting power and pulling the other engine down so I couldn't even get on plane.

Once I have a code it it, does it store it until reset? I've run through all the connections I can find on the engine and pulled them apart and put them back together and it's still doing it. Could it be a historic code? Am I missing something???

Apparently I'm the only person who has ever had this problem with the 300X based upon the responses. :(

It will run and has never died, however, on the way back in, it would fire up and idle, still smoking, but as soon as I'd touch the throttle it would go into a solid beep and the rpm's would stay below 1,000. Everyone I've talked to with the X's just put gas and oil into them and have no problems. Must be my luck. :( :(

why do you say its the oil pump alarm ?

Because on the Smartcraft gauge I'm getting an oil can looking icon, the engine looking icon and the bell icon all flashing at me. According to the destruction manual that is the Oil Pump Fault. ;)

First off I just want to say thank you for all the helpful suggestions I've gotten thus far. ;)

I still find it hard to believe that with the wealth of outboard knowledge on here, nobody has offered up more suggestions. Then again, I have heard from a few people that I've talked to that the 300X's aren't supposed to have this problem and gas and oil are the only concerns. That's great if that angle is working for you. However, if you're in a 30' Spectre and can't get on plane, that doesn't help much, so I'm still looking for help.

I hear that the oil pump runs off the tach lead that runs off the ECU and was offered the advice to change out the ECU's and see if the problem follows the ECU. Other than that, is there a sensor that reads the air/fuel ratio or the oil concentration that I should be looking for???

Thankyou for any help you can offer. My next step is driving it 3 hours one way to drop it off at the only shop that is apparently trusted in AZ to work on the 300X Mercs. :(

Jordy, time to get on Ebay and buy yourself a manual. I think most of us on here are running the 2.5's, which are a bit different than the "gas and go" type motors you have. We're used to working on these things all the time. :)

Sounds to me like you need to hook the engine up to a DDT and use the proper SmartCraft cartridge for analysis. The DDT will give more specific information regarding faults.

this probally wont help but the fitting that the oil hose goes on , the one comming out of the block , take it out of the block and see if it has any debris in it .... is the oil tank on the motor full to the tippy top ?
