Thanks to all of you for all the help and input. It was exactly as you suspected--a back pressure issue. Once on the water, everything leveled off and the engine idled and performed perfectly.
A couple of points of interest;1--for those of you who were not sure (like me) the 225 3.1 VMax reed cages will install to the block either way--there is no "upside down" installation possibility---2-If any of you are interested in a little extra from your Yamaha, seriously consider installing Hydrotec's Composite reeds!! You really can feel and see a difference.
Thank you all again! It really is comforting knowing a group of folks like you is out there willing to help.. Rich

Hi Don, I can't really comment on the Boysen reeds because I did not run them back to back in my Yamaha. I used them in a Merc I had years ago and they made a noticable difference. Also, I think the Hydrotec reeds are a little more than 200-- so if it's a money issue, Boysen may be the way to go. I do know that Hydrotec put a whole lot of research into the developement and testing of their reeds and I absolutely know the end result in my set up is nothing short of awesome! Also, the support team at Hydrotec has been perfect to work with. I don't know if you followed my original thread (I had some weird idling issues I didn't know how to deal with when I installed the reeds)--The guys on the board really helped and got me on line--but Hydrotec must have read the board and THEY contacted me and were right there with some additional advice.
Didn't mean to go on this much but I am not afraid to recommend this product to everyone. Rich

The fact they called you could be because a nationally knows magazine writer kinda poked fun at someone for complaining about HT on this board, while the Worthy's were out of town.

Not going to say anymore, except to say his comments to the guy were right on, you shouldn't flame a vendor on a board like this, especially when you haven't even spoken to them in person.

Because of them, I may actually repower with a Yammie instead of a Merc.

I read the article and agree with the magazine too. My relationship with Hydrotec only goes back 3 years but I never had a problem. They were as courteous and helpful then as they are now. Every time I called them I got answers and good advice.
I was Merc for 20+ years and only went Yamaha because the boat I bought was equipped that way. My intention was to sell it and buy a Merc but after running it and talking to Hydrotec I decided to keep it and so far I am really happy I did.

Well the 225 my friend has, its an older carb model, has really opened my eye's about Yammie's. It always ran good, started right up and continued to idle with no issue, and pulled skiers all day long. It just had great manners, especially for just a carb motor. It behaved the way you would expect an injected engine to behave.

Besides if you find someone who really takes care of you, and calls you like they are supposed to, well its tough to top that these days.
