I know this really is a racing forum. But I heard there were alot of good merc guys here. My question is: I am putting a new piston in my 87 carbed 200hp merc. While i have the engine apart I was thinking about changing to a set of boyesen power reeds. So far I've been told if I wasn't racing it wasn't worth it. I'm looking for a little more power and better starting and idle. What do you guys think? BTW I'm a fisherman and the engine is on a 23' robalo cc.
thanx-

Welcome aboard FISHEAGLE.
New Boysens will give you better idle whether you race or not, you may get some better midrange also.
Dual stage reeds will give you the best of all worlds, better idle, mid, and slightly more flow on top end, (just don't expect to break any speed records)
Also if you break a reed, it will notdamage the motor like steel reeds will.

motor i just picked up had sucked a metal reed and had to have a piston replaced and cylinder cleaned up- i was lucky it didn't need a sleeve or to be bored oversize, the composite reeds are cheap insurance...might see a little performance increase too

Thanks for the input guys. I'm still on the fence with this one.
I got the engine apart tonight and found 2 vent jets missing from 2 of the carbs. Could this have been part of my problem with idling and starting? Or could these 2 missing jets have caused my broken piston? Or both? I had a major rpm loss(1000 rpm) for a while just before the piston broke. thanx again-

Vent jets are supposed to be missing on some carbs, it is normal, and not the cause of the meltdown.....you can take all of them out, and it wont hurt the motor.

fisheagle, sent you a pm
I've got some boyesen reeds that are in good shape mounted on 5 petal cages that i don't have any use for. I'll hook you up with a deal on em if you want to try them out.
