Is it possible to plug or cover the exhaust snout on the mid-80s v8 20" offshore midsection to force the exhaust through the lower unit?
I'm considering purchasing a boat that has such an engine, and in order to avoid the noise police I'd like to be able to cover the open exhaust when needed.
Is there a cover available from OMC? I have access to aluminum fabrication if necessary. Just not sure if there is access through the lower unit for the exhaust.

The old offshore race engine or the snout on the production 20 inch engines, they have a removable cover

20" production engine. I'll see it tomorrow, no idea if a cover is included.

I've seen guys who have fabricated a small little flapper that covers the exhaust snout. It's operated by a cable up in the cockpit. Seemed to work pretty good.
Wish I had some pics of it to post....but I don't :(

I've seen the flapper too, I think Land-n-Sea made one.
Bought the rig this weekend. Recessed in the snout is a flange with four tapped holes that a plate gets screwed to. The plate thats in there is perferated, but it could be replaced with a solid plate. I'll post pics later.

I have the same motor. My plate is not drilled out though.
There is a gasket that goes inbetween the plate and the motor too.

Loud isn't the word for that beast, especially after the dry stack! deafining is more like it.

We'll be using the boat at least occasionally for waterskiing, cruising, etc, so at least need the option to quiet it down.
How have the water cops in Florida been with it open and dry-stacked? Are there any noise regulations? Do any of them carry a decibel meter?

I think it depends on the population in your area.We stay away from the populated areas since we have a lot of V drives that run with us ,the game officers have actually came just to watch us do single runs .As far as mine I cant hear it up front but I've been told I can be heard up to 3 miles away ,dry stacked and no liner .

Hi Matt..I have the exact same rig, except my trailer is kinda raggedy,lol...My motor has the hole open, and it is pretty loud..I saw the tapped holes in there and wondered if it could be plugged..I guess it can..
does it effect performance at all, exhaust over the prop?? I have an over the prop exhaust Merc chopper...

You can cover it but unless the can has been removed or cut it isn't going to be that loud anyway. I have mine cut cuz I don't want the heat to start messing with the paint on the mid.
