View Full Version : Lower Unit Problem / Blackmax XR-2 150
I took my boat to the water for the first time ever. It fired right up and sounded great. There's only one problem. It will not move.
The gear cable is adjusted correctly by the manual. The prop shaft is slipping bad.
I brought it home and put it into forward gear. I tried to turn the prop with my hand and it turned clockwise, and went click, click, click, click. When I tried to turn it counter clockwise it also went click, click, click, click.
It does the same thing in reverse. It is pretty easy to turn in either direction with the clicking.
Are the gears screwed up?

Not enough information. Has the gearcase been off the engine? What's happened to it since it last shifted right?
I have never had the boat in the water until this weekend. I bought and restored the boat over the past year. I took the lower unit off of the engine to change the water pump and seals. I changed the lower unit lube and I didn't see any metal shavings.
This weekend was a test to see if everything works on the boat, but it didn't. This is all that I know about the lower unit up to this point!

disconnect the shift cable and manually put the shift lever as far forward as possible....then check..if it still doesn't make solid contact when you try and turn the prop counterclockwise........then you have a gearcase problem...and need to tear it down to inspect.
I found the problem! Last year when I got the boat I opened up the control box and removed the cables to see how well they move. I installed a new ignition switch, and greased up all of the moving parts. After testing the switch, I put it all back together.
I hooked the control cable to the wrong linkage point and it was not pulling or pushing my gear lever far enough either way to go fully into gear. It was only about half way in gear. The box has two points that I can choose for the gear cable to connect to, and two points for the throttle. At that time I chose the wrong one because I put the control box back together about a week after taking it apart, while I was waiting on my ignition switch to get here, and I didn't make a note of anything.
It took a while to figure it out, because I was thinking that something was bad wrong in the lower unit.
Anyway it will get tested out this weekend.
Thanks for your help!
