You're not alone! During the day I'm a VW, Audi technician and it took 10 times longer to put my 300PM together than the typical VW, Audi engine. And I been doing it for 30 years.

How many times have you put down a wrench and can't find it 5 mins. later.

It seems no matter what I do to my boat if I give my self an alloted time frame I think it will take it ends up 3 times as long.

....and then double it. :D ;) BTW, I have walked around looking for a wrench I had five minutes ago for half an hour, getting more aggravated all the while. When Barb came out into the shop, she noticed my frustration, asked what the problem was, and I told her. Imagine my embarrassment when she pointed out that it was in my back pocket.

Yeah, I keep my toolbox organized, but things always get misplaced. Years have melted off my life looking for tools. So I bought another set so I have multiples of each size (hoping it would speed my progress). I just end up losing more tools!!! And when I look for them, I end up finding something else that I was looking for, but can't remember what I needed it for...

Here in De we look for a shadetree and tools are carried in a 5 gal bucket. Ace makes and organizer for a 5 gal bucket for 19 dollars and I can rebuild with the tools it holds. Counting on having lots of shade. Rick :D

This year we got a larger family cruiser that is too big trailer to the house so I have to work on it in the slip or boat yard when it is hauled (our last cruiser was moored but small enough where I could trailer it back to my driveway a few times a year for service). I only live 5 minutes form where my boat is moored but you wouldn't believe how many trip I have had to make back to my house to get something I forgot. I even make myself lists and still forget at least 1 item or 2 back in my garage :o

Man all this sure does make me feel better. Just the other day I changed out gear cases and working only in an area around the rear of the boat I managed to loose tools, nuts and washers. Of course I found them and felt like an idot for having to search in the first place.

Yeah, one month it's this, the next month it's that. I'm starting to slowly get rid of them and TRY to focus on just a couple things.

oh this is good.... i dont feel so bad anymore. working on a boat in a boat slip sucks. after getting my boat big boat in the water. I had to replace the timing chain cover on 5.0 mercruiser. I made about 10 trips to get stuff I didnt have. I never did one before and didnt know what I was in for.. lets just say a 2hr job took 2 days.:o and to top it off then my stomach hurt for another 2 days from laying down reaching in the compartment.

I hear ya on the lost tools! And not having the right tools! A buddy and I changed the timing belt and water pump in his Acura the other day. We planned on about 4 hours or so, he had done it before and I am a decent wrench. Well, we ended up just slipping the clutch trying to take off the crank pulley bolt! That thing took at least 300ft-lbs of torque to get off. We had a 5 foot long pipe on the breaker bar and couldn't get it, just slipped the clutch when the car was in 5th gear with someone on the brakes. Finally drove the car to a shop with a monster impact, and got it off and then hand tightened it and continued on with the task. It took us from 11am to 7pm to get it all done. Funny thing was he never put tools back in the same place, just like you guys we spent half the time looking for the right ratchet or certain socket combo to fit the space to get it done.

Any time I attempt a car repair, house project, etc., I always estimate the time and then multiply it by three. Usually comes out pretty close.

and lets not forget the tools you can find at the bottom of the boat ramp. I couldnt find a snap-on ratchet the other day and some kid found it swiming at the boat ramp (luckly he was nice enought to ask me if I had lost it before giving it to his dad) good thing our shop door is 30 yds from the ramp.

Thanks Nick that is an awesome offer, but actually I was able to borrow one last week, a freind has the same boat only a sunbridge and he trailers it, so we put his in the water and pulled mine. However, mine is still too tall to go down the road to my house, so we worked on it at the boat ramp parking lot, cleaned the bottom waxed the hull sides and tried a different set of props, which worked great might I add. Not S&F speeds but crusing I was turning 3600-3800 and going 19-21 kts, now I am turning 3400 and going 22-24 kts, top speed was right at 30kts, not bad for a big turd :o :D

not bad... are there any over passes from your house to the ramp. and if so can they be driven around.. height is only a matter of what cant be avioded.. everything else there are permits for tnat...

1 overpass, yes, but the real problem is trees in my neighborhood, when I had the 25, which was about 12'-6" high on the trailer 9'-6" beam, I had only one path where I could make it without taking out several trees and my bridge for that matter. This thing is at least 14' tall.
Check out this pic on the trailer, BTW that is not an S-10 pulling it :D
Also sorry for the hijack :o

Yes I have to agree that the Magnum is a POS!!! But my boat only moved from the ramp to that location and them back to the ramp, about 500 yard round trip ;)
But you have to understand, the "haul out" was free, so I liked the magnum :D
Back to the magnum, they are made about 25 miles north of me and their shop is a joke. Last summer, a guy had a tongue break completely off  . He was towing a 29' sea ray up to the lake. The lake ramp has an "S" turn to get down to the launching area, he turned and the boat went straight, no longer connected to the truck, and dug the rest fo the tongue into the dirt (luckily). Our shop (a custom welding shop) went and welded it back together good enough to get the boat in the lake and the trailer back to magnum. At first they weret going to warranty it, but the realized the possible "press" might be a bad thing

I agree they are a joke..... I can see why the toung broke no support there at all... AND ZERO adjustability... and MOST deep VEEs dont fit either... by far the WORST trailer built on the market today... I have spoken to paul, or was it pat... at magnum and he is an IDIOT and he does all the design work... my Calkins (carnai) trailer is 10 times the trailer magnum is... but it only holds up to a 26 footer....

But they are cheap!
My last cruiser trailer was an Ezloader and trailer under the Activator is a Zieman
But like I said I got to use the Magnum and it was nice to be able to do so, and I probably will do it again, it is cheaper than the lift at the boat yard ;)
150aintenuff
06-27-2005, 09:25 PM
thats true.... zieman arent bad... fit well and hold up... newer EZloaders arent bad but some were no good... KING, Carnai, Prestige, or custom built to fit are the only way to go IMO...
