I just bought a 19' Cougar Tunnel with a 1992 200 hp xri efi with 2 hole CLE and a three blade 28 pitch and a six inch rigid jack plate. I was told the motor has only about 8 hours on it since rebuild. I had it serviced with new water impeller and had the timing checked and it had good compression. Everything else seems OK. I believe it has Boysen reeds but the rest of the motor is fairly stock. The oil injection has been removed and I've been running between 40-1 to 50-1 ratio. Prop centerline is about 3'' below the bottom of the boat. Max rpm is in about the 5800 range which puts the boat at around 78 mph.

What would be some basic engine mods to start with? What would be a good prop centerline? The last outboard I had was an 18 hp evinrude on a 13' boston whaler, I was 9 and it was 1959.

I have a 93 the first thing I would do is SVS and a PCU frm Tony Brucato. But make sure you have some one that knows what they are doing.

i would think the engine could be raised higher. your rpms are low enough that a few more will do you some good. bring it up an inch and keep going higher and see what works best. good luck

is similar to my 19 liberator. im using 12 ins setback and my setup likes to run higher than 3 ins below pad. im 1.5 ins now with no nosecone and top 4 holes plugged. im going to put a bobs cone on as soon as i get it. if i trim it much now, it gets hot. i would raise it and try it higher. my gearcase went bad and i got one without a cone and its not going to work. keep us posted.... :)

A good initial performance gain can be had by having the heads milled and blueprinted and installing an exhaust tuner. If your wallet can take it after that I'd go for the SVS!

I've done all three of those mods (plus some more) to my 200 ProMax. The heads, tuner, and SVS all added the most performance gains.

I'd recommend Jay Smith Racing for the head work and tuner.

Good Luck!
