21 Superboat

It's about 20 MPH slower than my Hydrostream, but since I don't have to hack the throttle everytime some kid throws a rock in the water causing a ripple that might end my life at 90, I still get there at the same time!

P.S. I couldn't find the gold at the end of the rainbow otherwise this picture would be a 28 Skater!

Mike,
Welcome to the Superboat fraternity! Great boat when you need to get through some sloppy waters on a regular basis. I owned an 18 Donzi and a 20 Cigarette before getting mine and I can tell you that the rough water ability is better as is the speed. What year is yours and what is the setup?

Was very impressed with the way she took cruiser wakes at the CT RR. Even with a big 20ft tunnel I would dream of doing that......sober hehe. Bring it up to the Rondak Romp June 20th to the 24th.

This is my new tow vehicle, I love it. I bought it from my buddy who has more money than god. He was mommy sponsored all his life. He custom ordered it.

1998 Dodge Ram Quad Cab SLT Sport 4 Dr. 2500 4X4 Heavy Duty
8.0 Liter 488 CID V-10 MPI
5 SPD Hvy Dty Manual
410 Dana Anti Spin Differential
136 Amp Alternator
Tow Package

I think it should tow anything I ever buy and I plan to keep it a long long time!

I was getting sick of turning around when the ripples got to be over 6" with my Valero. I rode in a friend's Superboat w/200 Merc on Lake Hopatcong one day when I started looking for a bigger boat. I always wanted a 24 Skater, but never really wanted the hassle and expense of twins. Lake Hopatcong gets pretty rough in the middle and I just couldn't believe how much the Superboat acted like a small boat but took the rough like a much bigger boat. at 65 in the rough I found it more enjoyable than 95 in a river. I had to have one right away, (but they are hard to find!). Of course Joe L. sold his beauty a couple months later. I would have been all over that one. Congratulations on that score Ed (Rotor22)

The boat is a 79 believe it or not. I bought it from CJ Keilitz in Long Island. I did a little history checking on it and found that William Pedus owned it before him in Lindenhurst. Pedus bought it from Marty at Surfside 3 after it was recovered stolen from the original owner. It was originally teal green in color. Pedus had it painted at Electra Auto Body with Imron. I bought it with no power, but it had a 200 on it with an aftermarket alien cowl.

I sold my Valero YT and kept my 225 Pro Max for this boat. I am running my Bob's 10" hydrualic jack and a 24 DAH Chopper. Best speed so far is 74.9 with a borrowed old style CLE. Looking for a lower unit now. It ran 72 with 4 people aboard the day with the rainbow on the Great South Bay.

Before the summer I plan to add hydraulic steering, another two inches of setback for a total of 12". I would also like to find a set of original front bolster seats. Hoping for a 300X one day but I may buy a newer 21 Superboat hull when I do that. I really like this hull.

Which Superboat is yours Paul O? Do I know you?

The Superboat 21 and the others like it ( Challenger, Scorpion etc.) are true classics. Anyone who owns or has owned one has nothing but praise for the real deep V bottom. They shine when the water gets sloppy. When the toys have to back off you'll be stepping on it.
As for the truck, sounds cool. I'll have to run you with my '99 GMC 2500 SLT Crew Cab Short Box 4x4
454, 5 spd. stick 4.10 gears.
Enjoy then both.

Hi! The Super boat looks very simular to my previous boat a Gilbert 22 .This boat did take overall offshore winns in the 80s rigged as a standard boat with full interiour and no nosecone!
Did sell it...was a wery good all round boat exelent to waterski behind , soft ride out in the ocean with the family. Did 85mph lightly mod 225 Yamaha, Bobs nosecone ,bobs lift, Torque tamer, mach 4 blade chopper ,solid dampers, exhaust innerliner
removed (realy nice exhaust tone!) hydr steering.
You can see my sons head in front of my wife .

Hi again !
I want to show you a trick I did ,and it worked over all expectations on the Gilbert.
I got two trim planes that was as wide as I could get on the boat (for effichency) I made 2 rods from Stainless steel tubing and welded on a nut in the end, attached the rod to the engine bolt that holds the engine to the plate. When the engine is low the plates lifts the rear of the boat , in this aria the hight is unsensitive for the prop. one touch on the lift buttom and the bow is down to meet some wawes or to plan at 10mph with no bow rise ! At speed when you rise the engine for full speed they get out of the water.
I think this sulution is nice because of the simplicity, and its fast reacting, very little added weight.
Thanks

We call that "killing two birds with one stone". Excellent idea. Is that a ball joint on thop of the trim tabs?

Thanks .Yes its a ball joint ! impressed you did see that! I was going to use it on the lower attachment to, but it could not take the angle ,so I made the tubing flat and made a hole and reinforced the end with weld.
bent it a little and used the plastic thing that came with the planes , a ss bolt and some washers to take the play. The planes are made for hydraulic actuation but I was able to buy them without. The plane stops into the mid where there is a step.

But I figured that would be the only way to make it work. Is there any binding at all or is your motion pretty fluid?
David

espen

Had no problems with it exept from inner side bending a little after using it for high speed in ocean , this could be a bennefit also to dampen the peak forces. The angle changes very little during the up and down movment so there is no binding.
ads up to the fun of driving ,changing the attitude of the boat instantly, you know that straight to the heaven out of the hole experiance....if you want to look serious or have easily scared passangers you can take out of the hole 100 % level with full trottle .maybe something for the drag guys?
Been on the boat for about 5 years.

Mike,
Mine is an 82 white hull with red outlines and stripes. Bought it last year from some kid up in Kings Point who only had it for a short while. His story (unverifiable) is that it came from the original owner out in the Hamptons somewhere. I got it with the original (supposedly) 82 225 Merc mounted right on the transom and running a vengeance prop. It GPSed at 67 setup like that! I added a Bob's manual plate with 8"of setback and ran 2 props, a 24 Quicksilver chopper and a 23 trophy. The chopper was faster but the trophy was a rocket out of the hole and mid-range. Now, I have purchased Hoser's V8 and am in the process of duplicating his setup. It will be ready for the early spring. I boat out of Amity Harbor and launch at Tanner park on the great south bay.

3 foot roller with the wind coming out of a small creek into a bay. Hit the first, stern caught the second, and dove into the third crooked. HST was a great rough water boat for it's size and weight, but that day it met it's match.

Just me aboard, I did bruise my elbow a bit, but other than than, it was really more of a twist than a crash. The right corner stuffed a little bit, and the whole hull just twisted on that impact. I was dong about 85 MPH. That hull was not secured to the deck too well. It's funny how some streams were made better than others. I also heard something about a center pod construction recall on those that required a reinforcement, and I was told this was done on mine. The boat was an 89 and one of the last few made before Stream went under. I'm theorizing that they used less resin to cut costs (alot of the mat around the wrecked part was very dry and brittle).

Is that a GPS number? How mild was that 225? Is the Gilbert lighter than a Superboat? I'm not asking to be confrontational, just want to know what I am doing wrong.
